Jim Rivera

Jim and my mother had went out on a few dates. When I was a kid I started working at Captains Cabin, was such a great place to work. Always enjoyed visiting with Jim after work. Wanted to play cards with the guys at the "round table" but never did. When I was in the Marines, I'd stop out and have a beer or two. I'd say " I was at such-n-such place and look what they were using for coasters"... then hand him one of his ball cards!! Was always a character. Miss Jim and the rest of the Cabin...

Jim was my baseball idol and model growing up, and throughout my life. What a lucky kid I was to have Jim care about a kid he originally did not know. I saw him many times at games at Comiskey Park, he always took the time to invite me to the locker room before games, gave me autographed balls of the team, sat me in the dugout, got me tickets for the first game of the 1959 World Series, always got me special tickets to sit in the photo cages at the park, and even took me to the Yankees...

My child hood idol, Jim took me under his wing as a kid. He made a special effort to see me at every game at Comiskey Park I attended, he sent me autographed balls of the team, he sat me in the dugout, and wrote letters, sometimes by his then wife Phyllis who also was an amazing friend. I followed his career, ate at Captains Cabin and often reflected how lucky I was that he cared. I fondly remember the New Years Eve parties where many of the ex White Sox would attend among them Minnie...
