What great times we had in San Jose when
our families were young.

Remembering Christmas Parades and always the "too tall" Christmas Trees. I will
always remember Jess with a smile.

We were fortunate in having The Marlows
for neighbors and blessed by having them
as friends.

My thoughts and prayers are with Susie and
Aunt ZA and I send my love.

The prayers of my wife and myself surround Phyllis and family as you walk through this valley. We are so grateful for the graciousness of Jess in hosting for many years the weekly radio broadcast of our worship services at the First United Methodist Church of Glendale. It was always a joy to greet Jess when he came to do those recordings. And we are appreciative of his presentations to our United Methodist Men on several occasions. He had a keen and analytical mind and it was always so interesting to learn from him. May the good Lord bless you, Phyllis, and hold you and Jess and your family always in the palm of His gracious and loving hand.

Im am very sad to read of the passing of Jess Marlow...I missed him very much, when he retired from the TV News...I always would choose his news report over others, because he just had a way of reporting that out-did all others...He was so down to earth and seemed to be the nicest guy. Sorry for his passing...

Most Angelenos knew of Jess Marlow through their TV Screens as a straightforward, direct presenter of the days events in LA and beyond. It was a job he did with precision, balance and thoughtfullness in a time when news anchors were respected for those talents and appreciated by the audience. I was one of those...and a little more.

When I was headed for college, I really did not have a fixed idea of what I wanted to do in the form of a career or goal. My uncle, who was a master carpenter and builder, worked for KNBC at the time and out of blue suggested that I might want to try journalism. Through his intervention he arranged a meeting between myself and Jess at his office. Jess took 90 minutes out of his busy schedule(he was preparing the 5PM news at the time) to listen to what I was doing and then offered some insights into the world of electronic journalism that were valid then....and now.

He said, among other things, that the key to being a good journalist lay not necessarily in getting or havng a degree in Journalism. One of the best skills to develop was to be a good generalist-"to know a little about a lot of thngs and a lot about a few chosen things that interest you". Listen first-then ask the question- and then listen to the answer. That in turn shapes the next question or the next line of inquiry. Accuracy matters (then and now) and you can never be so close to deadline that you don't ask the last question "Is there anything we missed?" Remember always that your job (and skill) is to give the audience as much information as you can within the limits you are given...and let the audience take it from there. If you have done your job right, they will understand and be informed and you can't hope for more than that.

Through the years Jess and I bumped into each other more than a few times in the field...and every time we met he had the same smile, the same enthusiasm, and he was, I thought, pleased with the efforts I made everyday in trying to cover news in LA. Our world, culture and profession benefitted from his prescence, and I owe him a debt that I can't repay...except by trying to do my job to the best of my ability each and every day.

I worked as an Editorial Assistant (aka, gofer) at KNBC News in the '70s and one day when I must have been looking particularly dejected, Jess came up to me and asked me how old I was. He then said, "You know what I was doing when I was your age? I was a telegrapher for the railroad. There was no more dead end job in the world. Everything worked out for me and I'm sure it will for you." What a mensch!
