Ronald Joy Obituary

June 7, 1931 - September 29, 2013 Sunday night, with his daughter by his side, Ron quietly and lovingly closed his beautiful eyes and passed from this life. Born in Ottawa, Illinois to Joseph and Delores Joy, he spent his youth growing up on the tough streets of Chicago. Ron enlisted and proudly served his country in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. He moved to California in the late 50's where he attended The Art Center School; there he discovered a natural affinity for photography. Ron had a wonderful eye for beauty, and his photography has stood the test of time. Ron had the great privilege of being one of the official photographers with The Beatles on their first tour of the US. He traveled the world on assignments photographing celebrities of the 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's. His images of notables such as Frank Sinatra, Nancy Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., Natalie Woods, Julie Andrews, Tony Curtis, Dean Martin, Jerry Lewis and his favorite, the beautiful Elizabeth Taylor, graced magazine covers, books, album covers and billboards. A tall handsome Irish man, Ron was full of charm, had a feisty temper and was always dapper. Later in his career he was a producer, writer, and a proud member of the Directors Guild for over 40 years. Ron worked as a producer or director for commercials, television shows, films and stage productions. Ron worked with Ray Charles, Sammy Davis Jr, Peggy Lee, Elvis Presley, and Nancy Sinatra on many shows in Las Vegas to name just a few. Ron was best known for his quick wit, and living his life on his own terms. He had a passion for travel, meeting new people, an irreverent sense of humor, and he never lost that Irish gift for storytelling. Ron loved beautiful girls, a fine meal, and in his words said "You got to look good, feel good, and smell good" always accompanied with a snap of his fingers. Ron was an amazing father to his only child Belle, a loving grandfather to Jonathan and Alexander, and he had a fierce and protective love of his family and the many friends in his life. He was always there for the ones he loved. Ron will be forever missed by his daughter Belle (Tony)Schwartz, grandson's Jonathan and Alex, and friends all over the world. Ron faced the profound challenges of living with Dementia with much grace and courage. The family would especially like to thank The Malnik Family, the extraordinary staff at the Sunrise of West Hills, Vitas Hospice Care, and Jeovany Quiroz for treating Ron with love and respect during his lengthy illness. Friends are asked to raise a glass of wine in his memory, recall old times, and care for each other. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation in Ron's honor to Alzheimer's Research, The Red Road Foundation, or the Veterans Hospital. A service will be held on Friday, October 4, 2013 at 10am at the Pierce Brothers Valley Oaks Memorial Park, 5600 Lindero Canyon Road, Westlake Village 91362.

I had the distinct pleasure to have been great friends with Ron when I first moved to Los Angeles from the UK in the early 70's. Numerous funny and extraordinary memories working with Ron on exciting entertainment projects in Australia, London, Rome and Hawaii. He loved great food, loved to entertain and was in fact a great cook. He really was my best friend, confidant and advisor. He went way too soon. RIP my friend.

I met Ron when I first moved to Los Angeles from London in the mid-'70s. We were close friends and enjoyed many successful business deals over the years. We also shared our fondness for fine wines and gourmet food. I met so many people through Ron but I will always miss his sense of humor and great stories, not to mention so many escapades and laughs with Nicky Blair, Jack English and Gray Frederickson. My fondest love to his beautiful daughter Belle.

I met Ron on 'An Evening At The Improv'in 1982. I was the first P.A. on the show and Ron you might say took me under his wing. Whenever he had a project, he would call me to work with him. I had the pleasure of meeting Sammy Davis Jr.,Sonny Bono and so many other incredible people working with Ron. He introduced me to Nicky Blair and I was Nicky's personal assistant for 3 years while he was opening his restaurant. I have so many fond memories of sitting and talking with Ron in his apt. I will miss him greatly. Nancy, I drove you once while working for Music Express Limo and mentioned my friendship with Ron. It was a pleasure meeting you that day.

To this very day I still think about him. Ron was a wonderful talented photographer. He did more than I thought. I recall he took professional photos of the Ice Skating Friends. I was young at that time and how true this was I have no idea. They told me his work was absolutely brilliant. Then in the late 70's I had a photo taken at the rink by a very handsome dark haired gentleman. No name was exchanged but, this photo haunts me to this day,Was this his work I have no idea. No name was on the back and the blank envelope was handed to me at the rink. Whatever,if it is his work I still cherish to this day. The ironic part is the outfit and music choice was to You Only Live Twice sung by a brilliant singer Nancy Sinatra. I thought how can I skate to this beautiful piece and do it justice. I had fun but still curious of who took this photo. Thank you Ron for all you have done. I to say in a still miss you. Xo

Fifty years ago, when I was 9, Mr. Joy was hired to do a promo photo shoot of me for the sake of advancing the career I was expected to have (I was then singing with Don Ho). While the career never really materialized, the charming photos remain...as do the memories of a kind gentleman who didn't talk down to a little girl. It was great fun, and I owe him for some delightful childhood memories.

Thank you Barbara and all for your sweet words and memories. I think about my Dad every day. I miss his quick wit, having lunch with him, hearing stories about him growing up on the tough streets of Chicago, but most of all the 5 phone calls a day to tell me that he loved me! I was blessed every day that I had my Dad. XoxBelle

Dear Belle, It goes without saying how we missed Ron in his last years. He is probably sharing a good Irish joke with, Larry, who departed before Ron on 6/8/13. He and Ron are shining bright in the heavenly sky; and hopefully having a laugh. They are both briliant freinds together. I miss Larry & share our loss.
Condolences to your family members;
