Betty Shultz Obituary

Betty H. Shultz
April 5, 1918 - January 13, 2017
Cornwall
Heaven just got a little bit more lively! On Friday, January 13, Betty Hoffman Shultz (Betts), 98, took the party upstairs, leaving behind her sons, Steve and Tim; daughters-in-law, Diann, Susie and Louise; nephew, Barry and niece, Barbara, their spouses, Diane and Harry; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Those who knew her will never forget her feisty nature and the impact she had on the lives she touched and her community.
Betts was born in Bernardsville, NJ, on April 5, 1918. Always one to take the road less traveled, she entered Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in September 1935, where she was one of only three women in her class. While acquiring her degree, she also acquired her beloved husband, classmate, Walter W. Shultz II. The two newlywed doctors, after earning their degrees and licenses, made their home in Lebanon, building a busy practice, social life and family.
Lebanon needed an outlet for creative expression, and Betts answered the call! Combining her talents for inspiring collaboration and fundraising, she worked with other like-minded residents to get the money together to establish the Lebanon Community Theatre. When the original location was destroyed by fire, she helped to re-establish the Theatre in its current location in the Red Barn adjacent to Stoever's Dam. She directed the first play in the new theater in 1975.
In 1977, Betts took her advocacy efforts into the political arena and was elected to City Council where she served for two terms. A tireless debater of policy and relentless "hounder" of local politicians, some might say she never realized that she wasn't on City Council after her last term ended in 1985. One of her most treasured accomplishments during her tenure was saving Stoever's Dam Park for future generations to enjoy.
Upon her arrival in Heaven, for which she will probably be late, Betts will be greeted by many whom she held dear. Among them will be her parents and brother; her husband and her two oldest sons, Walter III (Puggy) and Mike.
Those who wish to celebrate the life and accomplishments of this remarkable woman are most welcome to join the family on February 18, 2017, at 7 p.m. at the Lebanon Community Theatre, E. Maple Street and Theatre Drive, in Lebanon. In lieu of flowers, please consider making donations to the Lebanon Community Theatre or Stoever's Dam Park Friends.

My condolences to the entire Schultz family. I am presently collecting information and antiques for personal reasons of the medical college Betty attended. I acquired a medal presented to her as a 5o year alumnus of the medical college. I think it should be placed back home with the family If anyone in the family is interested please contact me via email [email protected] for mailing instructions

I lived only one house away from Betts (on Cumberland St) when I was growing up. She was a friendly, fun and interesting neighbor.

She always decorated the tree in front of their house at Easter and would lace it with free candy that passersby could take and sample at will. Such a neat person. Many fond memories.

We were honored to spend time with Betts and the Shultz family for many years. We always looked forward to Christmas together with Tim and Steve and their families. The whole Shultz bunch, led by their dynamic and fun loving mother, treated us like family. Although we moved away several years ago those memories and the laughter shared at the Holidays will live with our family for ever. We miss you Betts.

With much love,

Bill, Vicki, and Nick Clark

We lived 2 doors from Betts and are all saddened by her passing. She was an amazing woman at sooo many levels. A more interesting woman you will never meet. She had a heart of gold and loved her family and friends. The Hauers and all her family and friends will always love her. Heaven did in fact just become a more fun place. Rest in peace Betts

Betts supported my run for school board AND Mayor. She gave me encouragement and great campaigning tips. I will always remember her sense of humor and wise counsel. She was a Lebanon treasure!

Your Mother was also a lifesaver---literally. She saved my Mom---Betty Russell---by giving her CPR on a snowy evening in January, 1984. My Mom was driving down Cumberland St. on her way home from a card party with friends. She apparently experienced a cardiac arrest at the wheel of her car, which ended up on the sidewalk across the street from your parents house. Your Mother came to the rescue & gave her CPR on the front, bench seat of the car until the paramedics arrived. Although my Mom was left with some deficits---as she was in a coma for a few weeks---she lived to be 90 thanks to your Mom! Sending "thank you" flowers to your Mother was a very small gesture for what she did! What an extraordinary woman!

What an amazing woman! I'll never forget her spunk, parties and late nights at the theater. She was a dear dear friend of my mother's (mary Lou Kelsey) and our whole family. She will be missed but she is in good company up there laughing and having a blast! Xoxo.

So sorry for your loss. What a dynamic and inspirational woman, ahead of her time. I always loved her style and passion for creativity and politics. Our parents' generation left us wonderful models of how to live the American Dream.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the family. When you say "feisty" that is surely an understatement for Betts.

She was my friend and role model. The picture you used is wonderful as is the eloquence of the writing. I will miss her beyond words.

There is no doubt that Betts made a huge impact on every life she touched. As a child, she was by far my favorite "adult". While I'm sure she is welcomed in heaven, she will be missed here for her passion and sass.
