Joseph O'Reilly Obituary

O'Reilly, Joseph C.

Joseph C. O'Reilly, born March 10, 1929 in the Bronx, NY, passed away on February 12, 2016 at the age of 86. He attended Manhattan College and graduated in 1951 with a C.E./P.E. (Civil Engineer/ Professional Engineer). After college, Joseph proudly served in the United States Navy attaining the rank of LT. JG. He served in the Navy Construction Battalion or the Sea Bees during the Korean War where he was severely injured. He survived his injuries, completed his tour, and was honorably discharged 2 years later. Joseph went on to have a successful career as a civil engineer. Throughout a career that spanned over 60 years, Joseph felt his greatest achievement was training young engineers, many of whom went onto become successful businessmen and women in the construction industry. Joseph was a devoted, loving husband to Jeanne for over 55 years, proud father to George (Edie), Jennine, Sean, and Kristin (Geoff), and "Poppy" to seven grandchildren Joseph Conway, Daniel, Alex and Julia O'Reilly and Mackenzie, Geoffrey and Ryan Porteus. Joseph had a love for his family, for his work and for his home. He enjoyed vacationing at the Jersey Shore, reading, telling stories and watching sports and movies. Joseph was a humble man but always honest, fair and true to himself. He was so impactful on so many people's lives, from coaching his kids to his time in the service. He will be missed by many.

Death is nothing at all,
I have only slipped away
into the next room.
I am I,
and you are you;
whatever we were to each other,
that, we still are.
Call me by my old familiar name,
speak to me in the easy way
which you always used,
put no difference in your tone,
wear no forced air
of solemnity or sorrow.
Laugh as we always laughed
at the little jokes we shared together.
Let my name ever be
the household word that it always was.
Let it be spoken without effect,
without the trace of a shadow on it.
Life means all
that it ever meant.
It is the same as it ever was.
There is unbroken continuity.

A version of the Navy Hymn from a fellow Jasper Engineer '64 and Viet Nam Seabee

Lord, stand beside the men who build,
And give them courage, strength, and skill.
O grant them peace of heart and mind,
And comfort loved ones left behind.
Lord, hear our prayers for all Seabees,
Where'er they be on land or sea.

The Manhattan College alumni community shares the grief, and is now praying for our fellow alumni and the family at this time. The Alumni Office has been informed. As well as the Jasper Jottings community that I personally can reach. We are all a little poorer now. "No man is an island, entire of itself ... any mans death diminishes me". We are sorry for your loss.
