Marshall Berkowitz Obituary

BERKOWITZ, MARSHALL, beverage alcohol industry icon, 74, of Hollywood, Florida, passed away on March 5, 2007. After overcoming a series of setbacks related to a kidney transplant, Marshall passed away peacefully with his family at his side. Born in Salem Massachusetts, May 28th, 1932, a graduate of Salem High School and Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio, Marshall was known for his ability to entertain people whether it was on the football field, golf course or comedy stage. He went on to become president of Old Mr. Boston Distilling Company, Glenmore Distillery, American Distilling Company, Austin Nichols, Burke Brothers, Mohawk and Marie Brizard USA. He initiated the president's forum for the beverage alcohol industry having introduced and helped pass legislation in favor of independent wine and spirits suppliers. Amongst his many accomplishments within the industry, Marshall was responsible for the successful introduction of Amaretto Di Saronno and other well known liquor brands to the US Market. During the last decade Berkowitz was a consultant for various distilleries, wineries and beverage alcohol importers. Known as "the blade" for his putting prowess by not only his friends, but professional golfers worldwide, he enjoyed playing the links from Miami to Marbella. He was a member of the Diplomat Country Club, Aloha Golf Club of Spain and a past member of Westview Country Club, Ft. Lauderdale Country Club and Kernwood Country Club. His love of his wife and children was so great that he reconfirmed his wedding vows to Sandra on their 36th anniversary. Beyond that, some of Marshall's proudest achievements include receiving the Flame of Truth and Brandeis Univer- sity Distinguished Community Service Awards for his philanthropic endeavors. He supported Cancer Aid for the Needy, Diabetes Research Institute Foundation, Project Newborn, Girls and Boys Clubs of America, St. Jude's Children's Hospital and Mount Sinai Medical Center of Miami Beach. Marshall's spirit and zest for life will live on through his wife of 52 years, Sandra, his loving children, Nancy (Richie) Knecht, Howard and Melissa (Robert) Netkin, and the star of his life, grandson Samuel Netkin. Marshall leaves his nephews and nieces Jeffrey (Yolanda), Richard, Nathan, Hillary Walling, and Stuart (Susan) Brenner and several other family members. Services will be held at Levitt-Weinstein Memorial Chapel, 18840 West Dixie Hwy., NMB on Wednesday, March 7th, 2007 at 2:00p.m., (305) 932-2700. Dad,
As we approach the anniversary of your passing to a better place, I am so grateful for the time we spent together. I miss you terribly. I feel your presence when it matters most. I hope we have made you proud.
Each day I strive to emulate your sense of humor, purpose, goodness and love.
You would really enjoy your great grandson Logan who was named after you. He is smart, funny and kind with loads of energy.
Richie and I will continue your legacy of family first. Love you so much

I cannot believe that my dad has been gone for 14 years. I am so glad he is not having to deal with Covid. I know that he is watching over us all and helping my mom get through these difficult and isolating times. Thank god for that! I love sharing the wisdom he imparted on me with my children. When I do, I let them know that these lessons came from Papa. I so wish he could have met his grand daughter and gotten to know her and his grandson better! Parts of him definitely live on in them and it makes his loss much easier on me... I miss you so dad!

Dad I miss you so much, especially your ability to bring a ray of light and laughter to even the most difficult things to deal with. Wish you were here so I could hold your hand, hug you, give you a kiss and dance with you standing on top of your feet. Love you always Nancy

Tomorrow will be the 8th anniversary of dad's passing. I miss him so much! He had this amazing ability to make any problem or obstacle seem easy to overcome. He had so much depth and compassion. His sense of humor was so simple yet so smart. He used to tell my brother, sister and I he knew everything. Even though I knew this was not possible, it seemed he did. He was larger than life. I do wish he had met his grand daughter. He would be so proud and in love with both of his grandchildren. Without a doubt, his spirit lives on in both of them and in our whole family... Rest in peace daddy. I love you always!

It was an honor and previlege to have worked for Marshall for many years. He was the most knowledgable person I have known and always had sense of humor even when you knew he was in pain. Now he can rest in peace and our prayers and thoughts go out to the Berkowitz family. He will be greatly missed.

I can't believe we will never have lunch again. We will never hear his jokes again nor benefit from his wisdom. I miss him already and wish I could be there with you.
