Floyd Simpson Obituary

Dr. Floyd Duane Simpson

Dr. Floyd Duane Simpson was born on August 6, 1944 to parents Gertrude and Clive Simpson in Sac City, Iowa. He died peacefully on January 12, 2017, with his wife and soulmate, Diane Simpson, by his side where she has been for 30 years. Dr. Simpson graduated from Ellsworth Junior College, Worsham College of Mortuary Science, Buena Vista College and the College of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery in Des Moines, Iowa. He served in the Air Force as a major and a military doctor, stationed in Arizona, from 1979 through 1981. He remained a devout patriot his entire life and never ceased to tear up when hearing the National Anthem or "God Bless the USA." He then began his private practice of medicine as a psychiatrist. He and Diane (Fick) Simpson were married on February 14, 1986.

Perhaps his understanding of how the mind works inspired him to keep his own so active. Dr. Simpson never stopped acquiring knowledge on any and every topic. He was often found with his nose in his "scientific journals" and he loved to share what he had learned with his grandchildren. From him, they learned trivia such as the distance to the sun from the moon and the definition of a "tittle" (the dot atop an "i" or "j"). He had unique nicknames for his grandchildren, who loved to hear grandpa tell them jokes. He also enjoyed gardening and growing vegetables, caring for his fish tank, San Francisco Forty-niner's football and cooking for his family and friends. No one ever tired of his famous goulash (made with at least three pounds of cheese). Dr. Simpson had immense pride in his children and his greatest source of happiness was spending time with them and his grandchildren.

Dr. Simpson was preceded in death by his parents and his son, Kent Montana Simpson, with whom he is now joyfully reunited. He is survived by his loving wife, Diane, and their six children and fourteen grandchildren: Amy Simpson Crum (husband Joe, children John Hunter, Payton, Madison and Taylor), Matthew Simpson, Scott Simpson, Dustin Simpson (wife Emily, children Isabelle, Noah, Allison and Elijah), Nicole Harrigan (husband Tim, children Paige, Riley, Quinn and Mark), and Shea Simpson (wife Tara, children Cassandra and Caden). He is also survived by his four siblings, Roger Simpson, Mark Simpson, Marcyne Larson and Marlyce Simpson.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, January 16th at 11:00 a.m. at Campbell United Methodist Church. A memorial fund has been established at Old Missouri Bank.

Dr. Simpson was a wonderful doctor. I'm deeply saddened to hear of your loss. I worked for him for awhile and later, after several losses at once, became a patient for awhile. I'll never forget his compassion and kindness through my darkest hour. I had hoped to reconnect to thank him personally and found this notice. Just wanted to share my sympathy and gratitude for his help with his family. He was a good man.

I am so sorry for your GREAT loss. He was so much fun to be around. Doc would teach me a lesson and while I am listening its like whatever.....but then later i would realize he taught me a lesson. He was like a best friend and father wrapped into one. Diane; May God comfort you in this time of need.
