I was just sitting in my truck at the shop after the men had gone home thinking of how others had shown me to have strength to go on in times like this and displaying true leadership. I was thinking of what Ernie would do in times like these as I remembered what we shared during 9/11.
Keeping him in my thoughts has given me the strength to be able to keep doing what others might find impossible .
He has been in my thoughts more and I miss him and my leadership mentor.
I know if he was here he would be giving his all to the helping of all others. For the ones that knew him and understood him he never really left us.
To all that love him god bless as
I truly miss him still
sincerely Rich Ely

The Anniversary of Ernie's death reopens all the sad feelings I had when i learned of his death. THE FIRST DAY day I met my husband Jeff while in college in DC., we were surprised that we both knew Ernie who had moved a small house in Riverhead for his family that eventually became our summer home to this day. I think of him often & remember how very special he was and how our family loved him. Rest in peace Ernie.

I have only just read about Ernie's death. How terribly sad and shocking. My entire family loved Ernie - myself since a young child growing up in Bayport.
We were related by marriage & I was a regular babysitter. "always " thrilled by the 5-minute ride home on the back of his Motorcycle) ! I feel so sorry for his family and want them to know he is in my thoughts.

Ernie was a fine fellow and intelligent, hard worker who took pride in his unique talents on behalf of customers. We held him in high esteem and great respect. He was a good, contributing member of Sayville Yacht Club. We enjoyed his company many times. Our condolences to his family as we remember him in our prayers.

I first met Ernie as a young boy when he raised a home for my father, a builder, and continued to see him when he raised my wife's home and I did some carpentry for him. A consummate gentleman and honest business man who lived for his family and friends. Ernie and his values will be greatly missed.

When I first met Ernie many years ago I knew right away he was a very smart and gentle man.The wheels were always turning in his head and he knew I understood him and respected him. We worked on several jobs together and when he looked me in the eye he knew I knew what he expected it was that simple. One of the jobs he and I did for Randy C. Was amazing and for me to be a part of I was so proud of how I had the front row seat to work with him. But to him it seemed just another day. He cared for people and the safety of others with always running a tight ship. His word was final and crew respected him as he was a true task master .He and I would see each other regularly by my shop or at the farm stand in Eastport and talk about trucks ,winches , cranes and of course story telling of past projects. He was always happy to see me as I was to see him and we always make time for each other to catch up. There were more than a few times I would pass him on the road and turn around to catch him to ask his advise on some thing or tell him to come see some truck project I was building at the shop.He gave me advise about using my crane on this big job and I was so thankful and he knew I was. He was a true legend ,mentor and friend to me. I am very sad to lose him as I will miss him and our talks together. He will be always in my heart as I remember him.
My deepest sympathy to his family and all who loved him as he will be truly missed.
Sincerely ,
Richard Ely.

Our condolences and love to Diane and all of Ernie's family. We met Ernie when he became a customer at our farmstand. He was a kind and generous person who always had a smile and a good story to tell. He even named our favorite resident buck "Mooch." We are both deeply saddened and will miss him very much.
