I'll will always fondly remember Mr. Baker. He was the best math teacher I ever had. He will be missed.

To me Mr. Baker evokes comparison with the fictional character Mr. Hundert in the film Emperor's Club. Principled and kind with a wry sense of humor, the consummate teacher, he struck the fine balance of actually being your friend while still in authority. One of my fondest memories of Xavier was being part of the coterie of students that regularly dropped by his office after hours, working on puzzles, getting help on a math concept , or just simply chatting. Sometimes many of us would just stop by on our way home just to say goodnight -- it's just something you wanted to do. Though, in retrospect, I could have done without the onerous brain teasers from math club but, after all, that was decidedly self-inflicted. His was a life very purposefully lived and countless Xavier students are his beneficiaries. Thank you Mr. Baker.

In thinking about Mr. Baker, I guess the only thing to say is that bad teachers do not touch us; the great ones never leave us. They ride with us during all our days, and we pass on to others what they have imparted to us. Well, done and rest well, Mr. Baker.

The Manhattan College alumni community shares the grief, and is now praying for our fellow alumni and the family at this time. The Alumni Office has been informed. As well as the Jasper Jottings community that I personally can reach. We are all a little poorer now. "No man is an island, entire of itself ... any man's death diminishes me". We are sorry for your loss.
