Roy Troutt Obituary

Roy Trout Services are scheduled Tuesday at 1 p.m. at the USAO Alumni Chapel for Roy Hartley Troutt of Norman, 87, former president of the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma in Chickasha. Officiating will be the Rev. Bob Rice, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Norman. Roy Troutt was born on Jan. 27, 1921, in Durant, Okla., and died on Friday, Dec. 26, in Norman. Retiring from USAO in 2000, Roy Troutt's 60-year career in Oklahoma education spanned seven decades, 11 U.S. presidents and 13 Oklahoma governors. Under his leadership, USAO refined its signature liberal arts curriculum, regained unconditional accreditation and earned its first national ranking for academic quality in U.S. News and World Report. He led the school through the lean 1970s after changing to coeducational status, through the oil bust of the 1980s and to revitalization in the 1990s, when Sparks Hall was redesigned and the Student Center got an elaborate makeover. In his honor, the USAO Board of Regents christened the school's Administration Building "Troutt Hall" in the fall of 1995. When the Oklahoma Higher Education Hall of Fame was created in 1994, Troutt was named among the first inductees that inaugural year. Earlier that year, he received the Distinguished Alumnus Award at Southeastern Oklahoma State University, from which he earned his bachelor's degree in 1941. In 2000, the Ardmore Public School Foundation named Troutt among the first inductees to its new hall of fame. Before coming to Chickasha, Troutt was dean of the College of Liberal Studies at the University of Oklahoma. Before that, he was chairman of the Department of Education and Psychology at Southeastern Oklahoma State University, and a teacher, coach, and administrator in the Ardmore City Schools. A native Oklahoman, he attended Durant Public Schools, received his bachelor's degree at Southeastern Oklahoma State University and master's and doctor's degrees from the University of Oklahoma. Throughout his career, Troutt has also served in many civic organizations. He was past president of the Ardmore United Fund, Inc., and the Ardmore YMCA. He was a member of the board of directors of the Chickasha Chamber of Commerce and the Salvation Army. He served for many years as chairman of the board of the Jane Brooks School for the Deaf in Chickasha. Troutt is a past district governor of Rotary District 5770 and past international director of Rotary International. For his support of international humanitarian and education programs, Troutt received the Citation for Meritorious Service and the Distinguished Service Award of the Rotary Foundation. Locally, the Chickasha Rotary Club honored Troutt with a Meritorious Service Award for 20 years of service to the club. He traveled six continents as an ambassador for Rotary, attending its international activities and speaking at its events. A decorated veteran of World War II, Troutt established an expertise in the handling and disposing of explosives. During a tour of duty in the Pacific, Troutt employed his training during the famed Leyte Invasion in the Philippines and during invasions of other Pacific islands. Then, in Washington D.C., he headed the research division of the Navy Bomb Disposal School until the War ended in 1945. For his service in the Navy, Troutt earned the Bronze Star and other citations. He was married for 60 years to the late Nancy "Ruth" Stone Troutt of Fort Worth, who preceded him death on April 27, 2003. Survivors include a sister, Martha Horn of Inola, OK two nephews and two godchildren: Valerie Bostwick Jones of Ardmore and David Bostwick of Baldwin City, KS. Memorials may be made to the USAO Foundation's Roy & Ruth Troutt Fund, created to honor outstanding students through scholarships and public service awards, 1727 West Alabama, Chickasha, Oklahoma 73018-5322, or to The Rotary International. Interment will be in the Fairlawn Cemetery under the direction of Ferguson Funeral Home of Chickasha.

Memories and Condolences
for Roy Troutt

Not sure what to say?

September 17, 2019

Dr Trout was my guidance counselor at Ardmore High....I enrolled during the summer of 1963 after serving 4 years in the Navy. Dr Trout called men to his office to discuss my ACT exam. He sat there staring at my result and I became impatient and asked "how'd I do' "you'll never be a Doctor" Of course he was right.

Roy Troutt demonstrated what made his generation great. Instead of seeking quick+easy solutions to what ailed this institution, he committed himself to ideals that would take years to produce results. He responded, not reacted, to the challenges and critics, and he put the college on a course for success. He understood what loyalty, commitment, integrity, patience and tenacity produce. May he rest in peace.

I have such fond memories of Roy Troutt both as my Ardmore Jr. High science teacher and, with his lovely wife Ruth, as a member of the First Presbyterian church there. My sympathies to the Toutt family.

I am sorry that I am unable to pay my respects by attending the memorial service for Dr. Troutt. His accomplishments are impressive and his legacy will continue throughout eternity but my memories of him are of a very personal nature. My mother was physically and mentally ill and she frequently did things that were very embarrassing to me as a 16 year old. After she had called his office one day, he came to my class and took me for a coke and listened to "my side of the story." He showed compassion and concern and to my amazement he believed me. He taught me a life lesson that day that I have passed along to others throughout my life.
Thankfully, just last month I was able to express my love and appreciation for his living example to me, to many in the AHS class of 1960 and to so many others in his life. My prayers and sympathy go to his family and friends. Dr. Troutt you will be missed!

Dr. Trout was an inspiration to each and every life he touched. He lead by example. He was our principal for six years but our precious friend for many years. The class of 1960 kept in touch with him and shared many lovely visits. What a gift he gave us by being our friend. He will be truly missed by all of us. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family today and all the days to come.

Dr. Troutt was a true president, that always had a smile on his face and his doors were always open to the students on campus. I will always remember that white haired gentleman that always had a smile and spoke to me every morning when I passed his way.... You will be truly missed by the USAO alumni. May you rest in peace and your family is in my thoughts and prayers! Alumni - 1984

He taught us to think that we were special and that all things could be possible with some hard work, perseverance and goals. He led by example always and his Ardmore class of 1960 will forever be grateful for his guidance and so proud to have called him our dear friend.
Thank You Again Dr. Troutt

Dr. Troutt was so loved by the Ardmore High School Class of 1960 because he was our principal for six years......through Jr. High and High School. He knew each of us personally and guided us with love, care and firmness. What he taught us is to feel, taste, smell, and experience every moment as it happens and to really value whatever blessing is before us at that moment. His story was a best seller that will forever be immortalized on the hearts of us all. His legacy will carry on. He will remain forever young and forever a hero to those of us who loved him. Thank you Dr. Troutt for touching our lives and being a gift to so many.

I had the pleasure of working with Dr. Troutt for many years, during my tenure as News Director at KWCO. He always went out of his way to provide me with the information that I had requested. He treated each and evey person as a personal friend, and he will be remembered as a kind, and caring "friend"
