Dr. John F. Biter Sr.
BIDDEFORD, Maine - Dr. John F. Biter Sr., Ph.D., 77, of Biddeford, died Saturday (Sept. 5, 2015) at the Gosnell Hospice House in Scarborough after a battle with cancer.
He was born in Loretto, Pa., on Aug. 30, 1938, a son of William J. and Bertha A. Reilly Biter.
After his early education in Pennsylvania, Mr. Biter received a Bachelor of Arts degree from St. Bonaventure University in 1960, a Master of Arts degree from St. Bonaventure in 1963, a Master of Arts degree from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 1970 and a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 1973.
On June 18, 1960, he married Linda A. Phillips in St. Peter's Cathedral in Erie, Pa. She died Jan. 19, 2015.
Dr. Biter taught at St. Francis College in Biddeford, now the University of New England, and later taught at St. Bonaventure University for 25 years, retiring in 1999.
He was a former president of the Hills Beach Association.
Surviving are one son, John F. Biter Jr. and his wife Tanya of Bangor; one daughter, Stephanie Banks and her husband Donald of Bradenton, Fla.; one brother, William J. Biter Jr. and his wife Sandy of Kennett Square, Pa.; five grandchildren, Megan Biter of Waterville, Kyle Biter and his wife Sadie of Hampden, Rebecca Banks of Bradenton, Fla., Donald Banks of Orlando, Fla., and James Banks of Pensacola, Fla.; and two great-grandchildren, Kaylin and Ellie Biter of Hampden.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Robert and Richard Biter.
There will be no funeral services. Arrangements are being handled by Hope Memorial Chapel.
