Gary Furlow Obituary

Furlow, Gary Raymond 66 Jan. 29, 1946 Aug. 17, 2012 "A Life Well Lived… A Man Well Loved" After a courageous battle with cancer Gary passed away on Aug. 17, 2012 surrounded by his loving wife of 47 years and his children. Gary grew up in Portland and graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1964. He married the love of his life, Sandra, in 1965 and after the birth of their first child they moved to Alaska where they lived for seven years, eventually creating a homestead with their five children. Ultimately, the family moved back to Oregon and Gary worked at what eventually became the Blue Heron Paper Mill for the next 37 years where he was a member of the Safety Council. He had an outstanding work ethic, an exemplary attendance record and a great amount of pride in a job well done. He was known for sincerely caring about his co-workers and they continued to stay in close contact with him until his passing. Gary was a leader, a trusted confidant and an intelligent, thoughtful and compassionate man. He had an insatiable thirst for the adventure of life and all those who came in contact with him have a favorite "Gary story" detailing their escapades with him. Everyone who hears these stories laughs until tears roll down their cheeks. He inspired all by his example and encouraged us to live life to its fullest. Gary had a strong belief in God and always treated others the way he wanted to be treated. He was kind, gentle and compassionate and he was always willing to help others at a moment's notice. He reached out to many through his participation in Street Ministry, Royal Rangers and was a long-time Board member of his church. Gary continued to be an inspiration during his nearly two year battle with cancer by reaching out to others battling cancer and by breaking the painful silence of this disease. Cancer taught him that the only thing that truly mattered in life was the relationships with the people you love and who love you. He embraced this philosophy and shared it with all who loved him, right up until his last breath. Gary was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Cassandra Renee Parker. He is survived by his wife, Sandra; and his sons, James, Douglas and Anthony Furlow and their spouses/partner; his daughters, Christine Parker and Lorraine Furlow; his brothers, Steven and Jeffrey Furlow; his sisters, Deanna Shimshak, Nancy Furlow and Jhanne Jasmine and their spouses; eight grandchildren, two adopted grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. A celebration of life will be held for Gary on Saturday, Sept. 1 at Mulino Grace Community Church, 26900 S. Hwy 213, Mulino at 2 p.m. Please direct inquiries to Doug Furlow (503) 475-6991.

Wowee Daddy! 10 years since you went Home! I still miss you and think of you often... I think of Cassie every second of every day and am comforted knowing that you are together and every time one of our furbabies goes Home, I tell them to go find Cassie because she's going to love on them & play with them until I get there and I tell them you are there too to love on them... This year my precious Bennie went Home... he was my service dog and I love him so much & miss him terribly but I know he's there with Cass & you... That helps a little bit with the pain. It sucks that the anniversary of your death is Andrew's birthday dad... He turned 35 this year... he's an amazing young man! He is disabled and I take care of him...he is such a neat person! So smart and kind... I wish you could know him... I wish you could know me... I am so much like you...you instilled so many great things in me and I live my best life...my best self... God is core and center...I don't take even a breath without Him... You started that in me when I was 7yrs old at Flavel St. Baptist Church and now I'mm 55 and so strong...unbreakable & unshakeable faith. I choose God every second of every day & I choose joy... No matter how much pain I endure; I ALWAYS choose God, life & joy! Thank you for being the example for me... I love you always & forever Daddy~

When I first started at the mill, Gary was one of the first to welcome me to the "mill family". I worked on his crew for years. His friendly manner and sense of humor made him a joy to work with. I will truley miss him.

One of the most honorable and special friend a man or person could ever have expected to meet and be able to enjoy the times spent together, fishing, camping and praying. Thank you Furlow's for allowing me time to spend with him just us two. Heaven just got a bit brighter. I miss you Gary Furlow.

I will look forward to seeing my Uncle Gary when I am safely home. Gary, helped me get my first job and now I hope he is helping get a mansion ready for all when we get safely home. Gary helped and touched soo many lives, that he will be greatly missed. To his family, May God Bless you all and give you peace and abundant love to help fill the void.

Since the first time we met, we shared a common interest of us both being from Alaska. You could tell, that Gary was such a likable guy with saying to yourself, he is such a great friend to know. Every time I would see Gary, he always had a smile to greet you and he always had a positive personality and a smile. Working in the mill with Gary, he came up to me one day and was interested in being on our safety committee. How can you say no to a guy who has so many positive idea's to bring to our committee. We spent many years together having a good time with doing our safety idea's in the mill. People like him only come along every so often and he will be missed. My prays are with Gary and his family.

I love you daddy. I always have and I always will. I take some comfort in knowing you are with Mike, Cassie, Grandpa, Gram and so many others that have gone home before you. I know you won't suffer anymore or hurt and I can't imagine anything better for you than to be with Jesus and to have walks and talks with Him. Your life has come full circle...you are Home! I will miss you. I'll see you when I get home. Please hug my baby girl for me? Goodbye for now Daddy... Love always, Christy
