Paul Schmid Obituary

Schmid, Paul age 58, husband, brother, uncle, doctor and friend passed away Tuesday, December 17, 2013. Born on May 21, 1955 to Norman Pearson and Eleanore Frances Schmid, he spent his formative years in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He attended the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and upon graduation in 1982, relocated to the Orlando area and began his internship at Orlando General Hospital. During this time, he met and fell in love with a young nurse, Helen Bourne, his wife and partner of 31 years. In 1984, he began his family medical practice in the old Oviedo Downtown Clinic located on Central Avenue which had been built in the early 1950's. The office he shared with Dr. Robert Schamberger is filled with pictures, notes, cards and mementos from the many patients he befriended over the years. Dr. Schmid dedicated his life to caring for others and will be remembered by his patients, family and friends as an incredibly giving, thoughtful and selfless man. He is survived by his wife, Helen, his mother Eleanore (Connolly), brothers Lee (Julie Teague), David (Jean) and Eric Schmid, numerous nieces and nephews, his dog, Rosie and African Grey parrot, Chuck. Dr. Schmid was a member of the American Osteopathic Association. In his free time, he could be found outdoors as he was an avid sportsman known for his skills in bow hunting and fishing. A memorial service will be held at the Oviedo High School auditorium on Saturday, January 11 at 2:00 p.m. for family, friends and members of the Oviedo community wishing to pay final respects. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made in Dr. Schmid's name to Back to Nature Wildlife Refuge located at 18515 E. Colonial Drive, Orlando Florida 32820.

The day that Dr. Schmid passed Debbie from his office called me. I was devastated. I immediately fell into my kitchen floor and cried for a long time. I just couldn´t believe it. And that´s because he was such a great person. Along with the best Dr. I had ever known.
Dr. Schmid was my Dr., but at the same time like a brother to me. He always did what he could to help me with my health.
I have health issues and Dr. Schmid always did his best, or would recommend Dr´s that he thought could help me. And they did. He was always right! The bottom line is with all of his patients he did his best.
It´s 10 years later and
I´ve gone from one Dr. to another, but no measures up to Dr. Schmid. I´m trying a different one as of a couple of months ago. Let´s see how she does. Dr. Schmid at the time was humble and open about his own life. He wasn´t perfect, nor did he claim to be.
I still years later miss having a Dr. that knows and understands my medical issues. And one that I trust completely that was doing his best for me and all of his patients.
I see that years later other people are still missing him also.
I pray that his wife is well and that his family is doing well also.
God bless you all !!!

My family is heartbroken to just hear of Dr. Schmid's passing. This wonderful physician took care of our family for over 20 years. He cared for our children from toddlers to adults and posted photos in his office every step of the way. There had to be hundreds of photos on his office walls He was so proud of all of "his kids". We are especially grateful for the help and guidance he gave us during a devastating event in our daughter's life. I would not have known what to do at this time without his caring and compassionate advise. He was so much more than Dr Schmid- he was Paul. He was the finest human being that we have ever had the privilege to know. Our sincerest condolences to his wife Helen and their family. The world has suffered a great loss, may he rest in eternal peace.

I met Dr. Schmid when I was 15 years old. He has helped me through many rough times and many good times throughout my life. He was also a savior to me. I remember the day I went into the office with a really bad headache. He asked me why I was stressing so much and I told him that I was in a job that I really didn't like. I then, jokingly asked him if he knew anyone that was hiring. He looked at me and said, "Yes, I am". I started working for him in 1996. It's 18 years later, and I'm still working for him. I can't tell you how much I love him. He wasn't just my boss, he was a friend, a teacher, a doctor, and sometimes a father. He will always hold a special place in my heart..One thing I will always remember is him smashing through the back door, late as usual, in his camo or steelers scrubs! I sure do miss you Schmitty!

Dr. Schmid was doctor to my sister and her family since my niece and nephew were born. More recently my mother became a patient as well. Doc Schmid will always be remembered for his skills, kindness and as a pillar of our community. My deepest sympathies are with his family. RIP Doc Schmid.

Our family lost a dedicated, kindhearted & selfless man. Dr. Schmid was one of a kind. He reminded us of what it was like to be a doctor of old, who made house calls and possessed so much knowledge. He was versatile, down to earth and genuinely cared about you. We will truly miss this wonderfully sweet man who brought hope and happiness to so many! Our hearts and prayers to his family! Dr. Schmid treated my parents, brother and myself my entire life. He was my doctor, friend, and someone who I knew was always there, a central figure in my life for as long as I can remember. I can't imagine coming back to Oviedo, and knowing that he won't be in his office anymore. The world was better for him being part of it, and I know that my family, myself, and many others will feel the emptiness of his presence missing from now on. Thank you for always being such a kind, caring, and generous person Dr. Schmid. Rest in peace, and I pray that your family knows just how many lives your kind spirit touched over the years. Until we meet again.

February 10, 2014

So sorry to hear of Dr. Schmid's passing. What a kind-hearted man. Just heard about it today. He helped so many people in his lifetime. God did not take him, God received him as His beloved child. Our deepest sympathy to Mrs. Schmid and the family. Rest in Peace Dr. Schmid, you will be missed, but reunion will be sweet in Heaven as God has promised all of us.

My husband and I were saddened this weekend when we heard of the passing of Paul Schmid. He was not just our doctor, but a good friend who always had time not just to talk and explain, but to listen. Several years ago I received a serious diagnosis of a disease I had never encountered. He met us at his office one evening, after hours, and explained to us, in detail, using medical drawings and charts to describe just what was happening and what to expect from my condition. Paul was more than a doctor, he was a Healer. God's peace and eternal rest, my friend.

We were shocked to hear the news of Paul's passing and our hearts and prayers go out to his family. Schmidty was like the brother I never had. We shared an apartment in medical school, studied together, went to mass on Sundays, and graduated in the top 10% of our class. I learned so much, clinically and academically, from Paul. I found out that Paul was accepted to University of Pittsburgh Dental School, but chose to wait a year to become an Osteopathic Physician and what an asset he was to our profession. We relocated to Orlando to do our internship together at OGH. Paul was an outstanding Surgeon with skills to be admired. I left my first Preceptor Physician and was going to practice with a Physician of another discipline when Schmidty came to my rescue. Together, we opened Oviedo Family Medical Center, a remodeled old-time clinic in Oviedo that was active since the 1930s. I chose to pursue a subspecialty in Pain and Disability Evaluation and Paul stayed with the clinic and eventually purchased the building were he continued to practice. Paul was in my wedding party, was the Godfather of my Son, Francis, and was present during the birth of my daughter, Jenna. Paul was a Marcus Welby type Family Physician of the highest caliber. He always took extra time to get to know his patient's personal life which is so important for patient care. Family Physicians provide the majority of patient care in our country, treating the whole patient, mind, body and spirit. Paul Schmid is an example for student Doctors to follow. If all Doctors were like Paul Schmid, D.O. , there would not be a healthcare crisis as there is today. Rest in peace Paul, since I know you are in heaven with Jesus. One day we will all be together again. Love your brother Francis W. Brooks, D.O., Joyce, Jenna, and Francis.

I'm so sorry for the loss of this man. I enjoyed his stories of his dogs as I shared mine with him. He was more like a friend.

January 24, 2014

Dr. Schmid was my doctor, starting when I was 16. He was just great; always giving "samples" so I wouldn't have to pay for prescriptions when I was sick. I moved away after I got married, but when I visited the area with my family and my daughter got sick, we went to see Dr. Schmid. After the visit, she felt much better and has referred to him as a magical doctor ever since. My heart broke when my mother told me he died. I will never have another doctor as thoughtful and caring as Dr. Schmid was. He was truly a community servant. I will miss him very much.

Ok, what can I say about a man that I adored, looked up to, and always asked his advice. This man I called Schmitty, often Uncle Schmid
I by accident, but literally think he was like my Uncle, and tried to be professional and call him Dr. Schmid. But that never lasted long, I worked for this incredible man for 17 yrs, I was his nurse since I was 20. He was abrupt, straight shooter, and could be down right cranky to put it a nice way. But we understood each other and how we worked..took me a long time to understand that it wasn't me he was hollering at, but the situation. All he cared about was making sure the patients were taken care of. To make sure all the scripts were not left undone and the referrals for other docs made...so the patients knew that it was taken care of and had no worries..he made numerous trips to patients homes and I with him at times. Watched him get chased out of a yard and jump a fence so the dogs wouldn't bite his rearend..lol..can laugh about that now. What I'm saying is he was a very caring one of a kind doctor that will never and can never be replaced. He is the second most important person I lost in 2013, first being my mother 4 months earlier. To Helen and his family, my thoughts and well wishes will always be with you, to the girls I miss so dearly at work and are my second family..love you and carry on the way Scmitty would want you to, and to take care of the patients he so dearly loved.

For all those that attended last Saturday's community service, over 1000 people: January 17th - 19th is "Pay It Forward Weekend". What can each of us do to pay it forward to Paul's family, including the staff at the office?

January 16, 2014

I lost two of the most important people in my life in 2013...my eldest daughter at just age 49 and my doctor of almost 28 years at only age 58. Dr. Schmid was the absolute Gold Standard for all physicians...not only did he take outstanding medical care of me and my family...he was a beloved friend, brother, uncle and very caring confidante and counselor. Years ago, when I arrived at the hospital at 6AM for major surgery, who else would come walking into the surgical prep room, dressed in green scrubs but Dr. Schmid! I was just blown away, but he said in that wonderful way of his, "I thought we'd BOTH feel better if I was here". He had cancelled ALL his appointments until 2PM to stand sentry before, during and after my surgery. He held my hand as the anesthesia did its job and was the first person I saw when I woke up.
There are many, many other similar instances that I could cite here, just as all of his patients can. But I did manage to sort of sum it up during one office visit when I was going through a particularly shattering life experience 9 years ago. I jumped off the exam table, wiping tears away and said, "I don't know what I ever did to be lucky enough to be a 'Schmid Kid'."
That's the hardest I ever saw him laugh, but he did say, "Hey! I LIKE that!"
That's what we all were...Schmid Kids...and I think I understand why our greatly loved doctor had heart problems...he gave most of his heart to his beloved wife Helen, to his patients, and to his staff...and kept too little for himself.
I will try every day to live up to all the examples he set for us all...he was the most genuinely loving, caring, selfless person I have ever known, and he will live on in my heart and my memories until the day I see him again.
Dr. Schmid, Thank you for being you!!!
A grateful Schmid Kid,

I still feel such a loss after the passing of Dr. Schmid. He was my doctor for 27 years as well as the doctor for my husband and children. Every time he called the house he said the same thing; "Hey Sue, dr Schmid here". What dr. these days calls patients at home to give them test results or just to see how you are doing? He was one in a million and he will always be remembered for his healing, as well as his good humor. A funny story that is talked about in our family is from a long time ago when Megan (23) was about 4 or 5. I guess I was telling people quite often how much I loved Dr Schmid. Megan asked me one day if I was going to marry Dr Schmid, and I said "no honey, mommy is married to daddy and Dr Schmid is also married. Why do you ask?" She innocently said, "well you say that you love Dr Schmid, so I thought you were going to marry him! ". When I told him, we had a good laugh about it.

All of us and all of his other patients were blessed to have him as our Doctor. He most certainly spoiled us ALL. I always thought of him as a Marcu Welby, MD!! He truly went above and beyound in his work. I could go on and on with all the wonderful care in detail. Mrs. Schmid I will be parying for you your family as well as for Dr.Schmid's family. Our family was devastated when we heard of Paul's passing. We are so sorry that we had not expressed to him how much we appreciated him as our doctor and friend. He has been our family doctor for many years. He saw our children grow up and always took the time to sit and find out what was going on in our personal lives. He always took the time with his patients and was never in a rush. I remember one of our sons calling us after one of his doctor visits with Paul with excitement. Our son is also big with the outdoors hunting, fishing, etc., but Paul took him out to his car to show him his hunter's bow and some other hunting toys. I always appreciated him making those evening calls to find out how we were feeling or to give us physical results.

I remember back in 2000 I was at work and I felt a burst in my leg. I called his office when I felt pain and my leg was swelling in that area. Right away he requested very calmly for me to go straight to the hospital. I had no idea what was going on. When I got to the hospital, he had already called the insurance company, called the hospital where they were waiting for me and had requested certain medical tests because he knew I had a blood clot and was preventing it from traveling.
He was also great in treating my parents. He has been the best doctor we have ever had, and our family will miss him tremendously.

I want Betty, Shellie, Debbie, and Kathy to know how much our family appreciates everything you all have done over the years. Betty, you are the best in always squeezing our family in when we were in need for treatment. Debbie, thank you for being a caring nurse who takes painless blood tests. Shellie, thank you for always taking the time to meet our needs. Love you all, The Cominskys

Dr. Schmid has been my families doctor since I was 8 years old. For 29 years he has been my doctor, my friend, my secret holder & my family. I have lived in Georgia for 12 years now but I would still make my trips to Florida to be seen by the only doctor I trust. Any time I walked through his office doors, the first thing out of his mouth was " What did you do now?" He was & is such an Amazing man and person! From laughing at me while I gagged on the Tongue depressor sticks, scolding me for asking about diet pills to weighing my Mom's purse (10 lbs.) He left an imprint on everyone's life that he touched. He will be truly missed by myself and many others. There will never be any man or doctor like him. Much Love Dr. Schmid and Thank you for being you!

I have hesitated to add a comment because all before me have said it so well. He was a wonderful man, a true caregiver for my entire family and our community. We have all seen him draw on many a poster, provide us with a large bag of samples, call us personally with lab results, always ask about our other family members and of course about our entire selves. For me he was also a role model of professional caregiving. In an era of hurry up, he did not. He cared about the entire you. He adored his patients, friends and family.
