Arlene Roy Obituary

ROY, ARLENE P.
formerly of Warwick and Narragansett, died peacefully on Saturday, May 13, 2017, at St. Elizabeth Home in East Greenwich. Arlene was predeceased by her husband Emil E. Roy.
Born in Malden, Massachusetts, a daughter of the late Philip and Edith (Hiatt) Stevens, she resided in Rhode Island from an early age. Arlene was employed as a school teacher and served the Warwick Public school system for nearly 25 years. During that time, she thrived in the role of special education/resource teacher and helped countless numbers of special needs children and their families.
Arlene was passionate about learning and pursued many outside interests. She obtained a college degree, during mid-life, and graduated in 1973 from Providence College, Summa Cum Laude, with a degree in education, all while raising a young family. She subsequently pursued a master's degree, and also secured a real estate brokerage license. Her interests were numerous that included sewing, home design and building, antiques, reading, traveling, art, and music. Arlene designed and made the majority of her wardrobe. She amassed a sizable collection of antiques from all over New England, and loved to learn about their origin. She loved to paint, oil and water, with her good friend, Dottie, and ultimately became a highly skilled artist. Arlene's passion was classical music, and as an accomplished piano player, she played often with her favorite composer, being Beethoven. She was notorious for organizing trips to New York City to see the Christmas decorations or take in a Broadway play. She enjoyed traveling to may locations in the United States and spent many winters in Florida. She was a summer resident at Great Island for over 20 years, and cherished walks by the ocean, viewing the sunsets, and visiting with friends and neighbors.
In recent years Arlene lived with her extended family, at St. Elizabeth Home in East Greenwich, where she received an abundance of caring, compassion, and love on a daily basis.
Arlene is survived by son, Peter A. Roy of Warwick, his wife Donna; daughter Patricia. A. Roy and Paul Nienber, of Venice, Florida; two grandchildren, Colby and Olivia. She was the sister of Richard Stevens, Diana Keenan, and the late Barbara Wilkenson.
A visitation will be held, Wednesday, May 17, 2017 from 5 – 7 pm with a service at 7 pm in the Thomas & Walter Quinn Funeral Chapel, 2435 Warwick Ave., Warwick. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to Saint Elizabeth Home, One Saint Elizabeth Way. East Greenwich, RI 02818, or the Alzheimer's Association, RI Chapter, 245
