Barbara Ensign Obituary

Barbara P. Ensign
July 22, 1929 - July 5, 2025
Bethlehem- Barbara Powers Ensign, 95, of Bethlehem, Connecticut, passed away peacefully on July 5, 2025. Born on July 22, 1929, in Norwalk, Connecticut, to Johanna and James Powers, Barbara lived a long and joyful life rooted in kindness, optimism, and deep devotion to her faith, family, and community.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Robert W. Ensign. Barbara is survived by her sons, Bill Ensign (Judy Scribner) and Bob Ensign (Meg); her grandchildren, Bobby, Timothy, William (Kaity), Grace, Elizabeth, and Olivia; and many nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly. Her children and grandchildren were blessed to spend meaningful time with her in the days prior to her passing.
Barbara was the loving sister of Jean Cooke (Ted), Maureen Palinkas (Bill), Nancy Ryan (Leo), and Kathleen Callan (whose husband, Tom, survives Barbara), all of whom predeceased her. She was also predeceased by her dear mother- and father-in-law, Elizabeth and William Ensign, and sisters-in-law Joan Bloom (Barry) and Patty DeBree (John). Her great-aunts-Betty, Marguerite, Nell, Winnie, Anne, and Madeline-were a constant and cherished influence, offering love and guidance well into her adult life.
Barbara began her career at the Hat Corporation in Norwalk, where she met her husband, Bob. She later worked at the Famous Artists School in Westport, where her energy and cheerful personality fit right in among a vibrant community of illustrators and cartoonists. She brought that same spirit to the Norwalk Senior Center on Monroe Street, where she wrote the popular newsletter and could always be counted on to spread good cheer and compassion. She played an invaluable role in the success of the family business, Ensign Petroleum Equipment Company, wearing many hats and ensuring the work was done with care, accuracy, and efficiency.
Barbara and Bob shared a remarkable network of lifelong friends-the Irelands, Brauns, O'Malleys, Taylors, and many others-whose friendships were a source of joy and companionship through the years.
In Bethlehem, Barbara continued to give generously of her time, right through this past May, volunteering at Prince of Peace Parish, the food pantry, clothing bank, historical society, and other community organizations. She loved her family, her friends, and every opportunity to help others. She lived her entire life without speaking a bad word about anyone, always choosing to see the good in people and to lift them up with her kindness and grace.
Family and friends may visit on Saturday, July 19, from 9:00 a.m. until Funeral Mass begins at 10:30 a.m. the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem, Connecticut. Immediately following the service, a celebration of Barbara's life will take place in the church's parish community room. Burial will be held at St. John's Cemetery in Norwalk, CT on Monday, July 21, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. To leave an online condolence, please visit munsonloveterefuneralhome.com.

I remember Barbara. She was such a nice lady. She and Bob were friends of my parents back in the 70's and 80's as I recall in Norwalk. Sorry to hear of her passing. A life well lived. Condolences to the family.
