Graydon Briggs Obituary

1947 ~ 2013
Graydon Jay Briggs, age 66, passed away peacefully on November 11, 2013. He was born in Cardston, Alberta to Don Hardy and Arlyne Cahoon Briggs on January 4, 1947.
The oldest of six children, Graydon grew up in the Cottonwood/Holladay area and graduated from Olympus High School in 1965. Following his LDS mission to the Gulf States, Graydon attended dental school at USC.
Early in his career Graydon partnered in the first 24-hour emergency dental clinic in Utah. Continually perfecting his skill in the art of dentistry, he took great pride in the quality of his work. Graydon created a niche for himself as Utah's first traveling dentist, performing thousands of root canals across the state of Utah and in Las Vegas.
In his professional life, he was often referred to affectionately as "Dr. B." But outside the dental office, Grady took on numerous other roles, including restaurateur, musician, logger/builder, and artist, to name a few. He had a passion for woodworking, specifically using large timbers and logs, which he personally harvested. Eventually he built his dream cabin in Southern Utah.
During his nearly 20 years in Wayne County, Graydon made many close friends and thoroughly engaged in the community there. He was kind and generous and would often barter dental work for local services simply to help a friend in need.
Graydon was a spirited outdoorsman and adventurer. By bicycle, motorcycle, or dirt bike, he toured the beautiful countryside of Ireland, France, Mexico, New Zealand, and Canada. One year he challenged himself to ski a Wasatch peak each month, including August! Whether he was skiing, backpacking, or rafting, the great outdoors was undoubtedly Graydon's second home.
He loved spending time with his daughter and her family in Seattle, and playing the guitar with his son, anywhere. Graydon's beautiful singing voice melted hearts all around him. And in his spare time, he could often be found on his backhoe moving big logs and boulders around his property in Grover, Utah.
A creative, caring and gentle soul, Graydon touched the lives of countless people with his passion and inspiration. He continually strived to live a kinder, more meaningful life in every way. Graydon was preceded in death by his parents Don and Arlyne Briggs, his brother David Briggs, his former wife Debra Walker Briggs, and his step-son Spencer Pierson. He is survived by his children Erin (Clayton) Greenleaf and Patrick Briggs, grandsons Koen and Finnegan Greenleaf, siblings Kerry Briggs, Brenda Keller, Kim Briggs, and Jeff Briggs, and twelve nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to express their gratitude to the employees of CareSource Home Health and Hospice in Holladay, Utah. Their tender care and genuine compassion for Graydon during his final weeks will never be forgotten.
Memorial services will be held Friday, December 13, 2013 at Noon at the Parleys 1st Ward, 2255 South Wasatch Drive (approx. 2700 East) Salt Lake City, where friends and family can visit one hour prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, it was Graydon's wish that donations be made to the CareSource Charitable Foundation, 1624 East 4500 South, Salt Lake City, UT 84117, for people who could not otherwise afford such an invaluable service.

I was very saddened to hear the news of my dear friend Graydon J. Briggs's passing. Graydon and I served together as LDS Missionaries in Pine Bluff, Arkansa which was part of the Gull States Mission. So many great memories riding our bikes, being chased by dogs and spreading the gospel. As many of you know Graydon was a very talented musician and often late at night we would sneak into the little LDS chapel. He would play the piano while I sang along. After our missions we kept in touch and once Graydon and his daughter Erin even came all the way to Canada on his motorcycle to see me. My wife Cheryl and I visited him and his wife several times in Teasdale at his log cabin. As I had helped build several log homes myself we compared notes as we walked around his property looking at his handiwork. If you have ever seen the beautiful log home he built, you know that he was a true craftsman. On one of those visits, in October of 2008, we took this photo of us together, two old cowboys at heart.

To his children, your father was a very special man, and a dear friend to many. He is missed.

I worked for Graydon in Tooele and SL. He was kind, thoughtful, respectful and Generous. I never paid for lunch in 2 years.
As a friend, we did socialize since he was from Bicknell. I loved his stories and he always insisted on my husband coming.
He was the Perfect Boss.. Friend and Mentor. He was a perfectionist in dentistry. I hope you are playing your guitar and singing in Heaven Graydon:)
Too Young Too soon.

I met Graydon years ago when he hired me to work in his Dental practice at Waterbury. I learned some profound things about myself and life from him. I introduced him to Debra who he later married... He loved his children and life.... And he was a charmer. He was kind and good and amazingly talented. My deepest sympathy to Patrick and Erin.

I haven't seen Graydon since we were children. I remember few of the neighborhood kids, especially those who were a few years younger than me, but I remember Graydon quite clearly. His character shown through even then.

I didn't know Graydon until later in our lives when I was recruited to perform his last marriage. It was a treat for me to get to know this good man! I'm glad that our paths crossed. He touched my life for the better.
I'm sorry that I won't be able to attend the service for Graydon on Friday. My best to his family and many friends. I'll keep you in my prayers at this tender time.

What sadness to hear of Graydon's passing. Our sympathies extend to grieving kids, grands, exes, siblings, friends and nieces and nephews (who all adored their free-spirited and adventurous uncle). He was a bright light who made even a visit to the dentist a pleasant experience. All will miss his talents, charm, kindness and zest for life--not to mention his devilishly handsome good looks! Happy trails, Graydon.

I knew Graydon from my husband There were friends for 35 years. Graydon was my best friend. I loved his spontaneity, charming, and hard worker. He was very caring and very romantic with all the ladies. I am so glad to spend sometimes with him and say goodbye at the hospice center. We walked, played piano, see the horses, eat dinner, and laughing about many old stories. I will never forget him and it will be always remembered as my best friend.

It stopped me in my tracks today when I read about Graydons passing. It has been years since we talked but during the years we stayed in contact he left a lifelong impression on me. Many times he crosses my mind and always makes me smile. He was my dentist and I was an avid skier and owned a mountaineering business. Was always pushing him to push his limits and he always pushed me to take better care of my teeth. His obit is one of the best I have ever read. Makes me realize what a great life he truly lived. It has been my honor knowing him. My heart goes out to all of his family and associates.

Dear Patrick and Erin, I will so miss your wonderful dad. He was one off my most cherished friends. We had more laughs than 10 people. The experiences we shared since beginning our dental practices together will never be forgotten. I'm so glad I could spend some time with him at the hospice center. I I couldn't bring myself to tell him I was leaving the next day for 2weeks. I think he knew. What a guy. I'm home now so please let me know if I can help in any way. Your dad was so proud of you both. Love, John

Graydon and Family,

I only heard a couple of days ago of Graydon' passing. My wife and I pass our sincerest condolences to the family. We knew Graydon through his relationship with my father, (Richard N. Brinkerhoff)here in Wayne County. My father always spoke extremely high of Graydon, very much enjoying his friendship with Graydon. Very rarely was there a time that I came home for a visit that Dad did not talk of his friend, Graydon.
Thanks, Graydon, for your friendship and too Graydon' family we thank you. May Heavenly Father welcome you with loving open arms and enjoy your reunion on the other side. (and tell my Dad hello when you get a chance).

Graydon, one of our childhood friends. Fond memories of being pulled on our sleds by Dad on his motorcycle, with the Briggs siblings and the Scott siblings along with other fun activities. Kerry, Brenda, Kim and Jeff, along with Graydon's children I know I speak for LeAnn and Robyn as well, when I say you are in our thoughts and prayers.

I knew Graydon as a guy who I could trust to treat my patients with excellent care and kind consideration. He came to our office and took care of most of our endodontic treatment. He was careful, and thorough in his treatment. He always was kind and thoughtful to our staff.

I appreciated him as a friend and as someone who could be always be positive about the things of life. He was not one to gossip or say unkind things about anyone.

I was so sorry and shocked to hear of his passing. I only wish that I had known that he was at Caresource as I would have loved to visit him. Thanks Graydon for being my friend.

I was sorry to read of Graydon's passing. Our family has fond memories of the Briggs family in Cottonwood. Graydon's life was cut short but he seemed to have lived to the fullest. May the truths this family learned from Don and Arlyne comfort them at this time and give them peace.

Ah dear Graydon, How we will all miss you. We walked through so much of life together and it was mostly filled with your magic. I will never sing with anyone else like we sang together. My favorite was "Who Will Watch The Home Place" - who will tend my hearts dear space - who will fill this empty place - when I have gone from here." No one will fill your empty space - not for me - or any of my kids that all love you dearly. Until we all meet again. Love, Jeanne

Graydon was my first boss after I graduated from Cottonwood High School and I worked with him at his new Dental office in Waterbury. I learned so much from him and loved working for him and Richard Barnes. I have great and fond memories of my dental assisting days with them. I was shocked and saddened to read of his passing today. Take care Graydon as you move onto your next adventure.
