His family always came first. Jerry was a man of strength and true character, whose loving warmth and classic wit made him a friend to many and an inspiration to his family. Always a good listener, Jerry never judged others, and helped us all see the world with his simple, yet rich wisdom. Jerry was warm, loving, and understanding. He was a man of his word, and our shoulder to lean on. Jerry's health declined the last few years, but he fought a good fight, never complaining, and left peacefully and quietly at home Sunday, July 5, 2015. He was born in Salt Lake City on June 21, 1947, to Raymond Moroni Dugdale and Carolyn Hovat. When he was a kid, his Dad nick-named him Butch and that name traveled with him through life. Following graduation from Olympus High in 1965, Jerry joined the Navy and was honorably discharged from active duty in 1967. He was a loyal member of the Bricklayer's Union until the early 90's, and then went to work at Tooele Army Depot, where he retired after ten years. He then worked in the home restoration business. Jerry learned and knew enough that he could build or fix almost anything, and he passed this knowledge on to his kids. He was always quick to help a friend and lend a hand. He had a wonderful sense of humor. Jerry had a contagious laugh. If things got a little too serious, he'd throw out one of his famous one-liners to lighten the mood. He loved fishing, golfing, trips to Wendover, and sports of any kind. Our lives will never be the same without him, but life will go on though we will miss him every single day. We're so grateful that he was our husband, father, grandfather, and best friend.
Jerry married his high school sweetheart Kathy Hibbard in 1967 in Salt Lake City. He leaves Kathy, three daughters, Kori (Todd) Wetsel, Kelly Lund, and Jenny (Sean) Young, a special friend, Mike Lund, his granddaughters Drew and Dylan DeHaan, Madeline and Leila Lund, and Abbie Wetsel; his grandsons, Lukas Young, Max and Jake Wetsel, his brother Ed, and many wonderful friends and relatives. He was preceded by his grandparents, parents, sister Terry, brother Mark, brothers-in-law and best friends, Mel Eckerstrom and Carrie Lindquist, and many friends and loved ones.
We are honoring Jerry's wishes to be cremated. We will celebrate Jerry's life Friday, July 10th, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Starks Funeral Parlor, 3651 South 900 East, Salt Lake City, with a private family memorial to follow at a later date. Thanks to all the many, many friends who have loved Jerry and who have been so supportive. We wish we could name you all, but you know who you are. We also want to thank his doctors at the VA, and especially Dr. Ali Ahmed.
