Judith Kiernan Obituary

11/19/1937 ~ 7/28/2015
Judith Ann Kiernan, Ph.D., R.N., was fabulous - FAB-U-LOUS! She was a critical thinker, a hoot, loud, hysterical, irritating, brilliant, and above all a loving character who rarely filtered what she said and always wore her heart on her sleeve. Born to Eunice Warner Kiernan and Vincent Owen Kiernan in South Weymouth, MA on November 19, 1937, Judy was always lively and social. A cheerleader at Hanover High School, she excelled academically, and graduated in 1955. In the fall of that year, she started nurses' training at Mass. Memorial hospital. After completing her 3 year nursing degree, Judy began to work at Mass General Hospital as a nurse while she completed her BA in Nursing from Boston University's College of Nursing. Never satisfied academically, Judy drove her little Spitfire from Massachusetts to Colorado to pursue her Masters of Science from the University of Colorado. After receiving her M.S., Judy joined the faculty at the University of Colorado in the College of Nursing.
Always eager to help others, in 1969 Judy contributed to the war effort by offering her specialized skills in nursing, teaching and administration. The US Agency for International Development hired Judy and sent her to Washington, D.C. for 6 months of training in Vietnamese culture and language at the Defense Language Institute before ultimately sending her to Vietnam. As Director of Nursing for hospitals in both Saigon and Can Tho, Judy spent 18 months training local Vietnamese nurses.
Returning from Vietnam, Judy was hired as the Director of Nursing at University Hospital in Boston where she worked until moving to Utah in 1974. Why Utah? Judy loved the great outdoors and this was the perfect place for the consummate skier and tennis player. Always highly competitive, Judy once challenged her three adult, but younger brothers to a tennis match; all three of them on one side against only Judy on the other. She won. And never let them forget it!
Judy later accepted a faculty position as Assistant Dean for Community Service and Faculty Practice at the University of Utah College of Nursing. In October of 1986, she accepted the University's offer to be Director of Nursing for Medical/Surgical and Rehabilitation at the Health Sciences Center. Relentless in her pursuit of education and knowledge, Judy then pursued her doctoral degree. She earned her PhD in Health Service Administration in 1992 from the University of Utah. Yes! She was now DOCTOR Judy Kiernan!
Dr. Kiernan was presented the 1995 Administration Award by the Utah Nursing Association, an award given annually to an individual who demonstrates excellence in nursing service administration, including skills in management, decision making and dedication to continually improving the nursing profession. That was definitely Judy! After many years of tireless effort as nursing director and faculty member, Dr. Kiernan retired in 1996 to pursue a leisurely life that allowed her to travel, garden, ski, read, see independent films, and play tennis. Ever the social creature, she was the ultimate hostess throwing extravagant parties with gourmet meals. She wasn't totally able to leave her profession, however; when asked to help, Dr. Kiernan gladly returned to nursing when she joined Community Nursing Services as a patient care coordinator and worked with them and Summit Home Health Care for a number of years.
Dr. Judy Kiernan was not only accomplished, she was exceptionally funny with a sharp wit. She loved people and animals and had a very strong emotional bond with her own cats, dogs, and birds. She was generous with her time, her expertise, her opinions and her heart. She had a compassionate spirit, strong voice, and stronger personality. She was an advocate for women and women's issues and always up on the latest political concerns. She had a thirst for knowledge and enjoyed a good debate. But ultimately Judy had love: love for others, love for animals, love for diversity and social justice, love for good food and travel, love for the right outfit and matching jewelry, and especially love for family.
Judy is survived by her brothers Thomas F. Kiernan, Hudson, FL; Vincent O. Kiernan, East Falmouth, MA; Steven L. Kiernan, Milton, MA and her sister, Susan Kiernan Farrell, Phoenix, AZ. She has 9 nephews and nieces who adore her and 8 great-nephews and great-nieces who will hear stories about their intelligent and wonderfully crazy Aunt JuJu for years to come. If you didn't know Judy Kiernan, you missed out.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, August 16th from 2:00-4:00 PM at Starks Funeral Parlor, 3651 South 900 East, Salt Lake City. Online condolences may be offered to her family at www.starksfuneral.com.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to any pet facility. Judy would want to know that even in death she is making an impact and helping her animal friends.

I am literally just now, day 2 of 2017, going through old contact data and decided to look up Judy. You see, Judy and I were very close in Vietnam, Can Tho, in particular. We had some good times ~ to the extent folks can have good times in a war zone.

Everything that I've read of the others who have written is so true: lively, cheerful, always helping, and loving. That was Judy!

We kept in touch after VN and my grad school. I visited her at her beach side home -- was it Nantucket? I don't recall. But I do recall swimming and showering outside.

She invited me to UT years later for skiing. Unfortunately, I did not go. I think we were in touch briefly from time to time but less frequently over time.

I'm very saddened by her loss. It will come to all of us, of course. But I feel like a vital part of me is gone.

Judy: you were wonderful. I have not nor will I forget you. I'm so glad you touched so many lives so well as these testaments make clear.

Anyone in the family or friends who wishes to contact me, please do.

Oh no Judith. I haven't kept up, and now you are gone. Judith was on my tennis team for years until 2007. What a fun lady that will be truly missed. She helped me with my husband when he was so sick. We used Starks Funeral Home after his death 11/2/15. Great place. Judith, you will be missed.

I was so shocked when I heard Judy was no longer with us. What a wonderful woman ! We were in Salt Lake in July, and were fortunate to have dinner with her. Little did we know that this would be our last time to share a fun everning with dear Judy.
What a loss... Judy was such a caring person who went out of her way to help others. Judy did not have a mean bone in her body and was a consumate, caring person to all her patients and friends. Judy, we will miss you so much. God Bless. Bel Randall

What a dear friend we have lost! Our hearts are broken. Judy was like a big sister to me. She was always a reliable ear and advisor. I will always remember first meeting her at her home in the avenues. I will also always remember her impromptu 'open house' on the very day she moved into her new home. I think someone even spilled red wine on her carpet Day 1!She hosted so many fun parties, including a surprise birthday party for me. She was an excellent cook and a very generous and gracious hostess. Her love for her animals and for her family was very intense. Judy felt particularly close to two dogs: Pepper and Tulip. She also loved her bird Placido. They brought such joy to her life. I will miss Judy so much. Lisa Bakhsheshy

Judy was a very caring, smart, fun loving friend. She loved all animals and disliked hurting even an ant or fly. We shared so many great times. She was always there for me as I was for her. Judy knew her family loved her and was so looking forward to seeing them in October. I will miss my dearest friend more than words can ever express.

Judy was a wonderful woman and also my boss for many years. She always pushed to me to expand my horizons. I appreciated her so much for her kindness and of course her unending energy! I missed her when she left the University hospital upon retirement but then we reconnected when she worked at CNS. Judy is a tremendous woman and I am so glad that I got to be a small part of her life. Donna Thomas

To Judy's Loved Ones,

Judy was very kind to me when I worked at the University of Utah Hospital. During the time that my young daughter had cancer, Judy was the Nurse Manager and she made special arrangements for me to go into the recovery room right after my daughter's surgery. I have never forgotten that kind gesture; it meant a lot to my little girl for me to be there. I will always remember the special things Judy did for me as well as her kind and encouraging words.

Judy was always so much fun and had such a positive attitude. She was a wonderful nurse and was well respected by her colleagues.

I send my sincerest condolences to Judy's family and dear friends.

Judy was a lovely person who enriched the lives of all with whom she came in contact with. I was saddened to hear of Judith's passing. We always enjoyed her visits to our place in the Utah mountains, and visiting with her in SLC. She was a gracious hostess and great conversationalist. RIP Judy! You will be missed.

I met Judy 30 years ago and have had the privilege of being her hair dresser and friend. We shared all the ups and downs of life together and became a great support for each other through the years. i will miss the way she would walk into the Salon and call out "where's my Asty Kins" ! She would light up a room with her smile and energy and loved to chat with everyone. She was so generous and loving and taught me to live a "fabulous" life! She was also Aunt Judy to my son Jakob. She never missed a birthday and was always a huge support of anything he set out to do, especially his academics. You have left a big hole in our hearts Judy!
I will forever miss my "Judy Kins"!
With much love and condolences to Judy's fabulous sister Susan and her brothers whom she adored.

Judy's accomplished life is well chronicled, and her spirit is captured in words, but I still cannot fathom that I am reading her obituary! She and I should be sharing stories about our precious little rescue pets, consuming champagne with strawberries, scheduling our next lunch at the Metropolitan, and planning whether our first ski runs will be on Mayflower or on Empire when the first snow flies.

Judy, dear friend, just remember that "Snow is just Mother Nature showing off her diamonds." (The Singers)
With love and condolences,
Dr. Karen Whitney, Houston, TX
