Dear Wixted Family, I am sorry to hear about Bernard's passing. I remember him from days gone by in Port Carbon, PA. I attended St Stephen's Grade School for 8 years. I was in 8th grade in 1955 which was the last year for the school. I was in the first freshman class at Nativity in 1956, graduating in 1959, the first class to complete 4 years. I remember Bernard when he was an outstanding guard on the St Stephen's Basketball team, along with his teammates Ed Kubilus, Ed (Moe) Brown, Tom Bartush, Bill Lewelyn. I moved to California in 1968 but I return "home" to Port Carbon every 5 years for my Nativity class reunions. In fact, I was just home this August 2014 for our 55 year class reunion. I walked around Port Carbon reminiscing about the "good old days". I went to Mass at St Stephens and looked at the house just across the street from the church and thought to myself, "there's Bernie Wixted's house". It was and always be "Bernie Wixted's house". Bernard didn't know me, but I knew him because he was a star player on the basketball team. I still have my St Stephen's Athletic card from 8th grade that allowed me to attend the basketball games. Those were the good old days!!! May the "Star Guard" on St Stephen's High School basketball team rest in peace. He made an impression on a young grade school kid. He has been and will be remembered even if I never saw him after he graduated from St Stephen's High School. Sincerely, Tom Purcell, Los Alamitos, CA
