Louis Armstrong Obituary

Louis Palmer Armstrong

Louis Palmer Armstrong, age 90, passed away January 1, 2017, after a hard-fought battle with congestive heart failure. Visitation will be held in the St. Michael the Archangel Chapel at The Cathedral of St. John Berchmans on Saturday, January 7, 2017, at 12:30 p.m. A Funeral Mass will follow at 1:00 p.m. with Msgr. J. Carson LaCaze officiating.

"Lou" was born November 15, 1926, in Orange, TX to Opal Palmer Booth and William Clarence Armstrong. He spent his childhood in Houston, TX, Tuscaloosa, AL, and in a Maryland suburb of Washington, D.C. He attended the University of Houston and graduated from the University of Texas with a degree in Petroleum Engineering. Lou joined the Air Forces United States Army in 1944. Lou's love of aviation motivated him to obtain his pilot's license, which provided hours of recreation. Lou spent most of his professional life in the oil business, finishing his career in natural gas compression at Ariel Corporation.

Lou married the love of his life, Barbara B. Armstrong in 1954. They made their home in New Orleans, Houston and Lafayette. Lou and Bobby had one daughter, Bobby Lou Armstrong, who survives him. After Hurricane Katrina, the entire family moved to Shreveport, which Lou embraced wholeheartedly. He was a parishioner of St. John Berchmans and a member of East Ridge Country Club.

A die-hard Longhorns fan, Lou was a great sport who would swap football jokes with his Aggie friends and was constantly upset with Texas' coaches. He pulled for the LSU Tigers and the New Orleans Saints. Lou's knowledge was vast and his interests diverse; those who knew him loved hearing his stories and opinions. His lamentations on politics were spot on and he was razor-sharp until his last days. He enjoyed history, the implications of World War II, the stock market and a good English murder mystery. He was a charming man with a sly wit. Lou was also a man of great faith, who put God first in his life.

Lou was preceded in death by his parents and his wife of 58 years.

Bobby Lou would like to thank Lennie Bohn at East Ridge Country Club for her years of support and devotion. She also wishes to thank caregivers Leonard Rose, Leroy Washington, Shenell Conway and Kathy Williams.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Cathedral of St. John Berchmans, Our Lady of Prompt Succor Shrine in New Orleans, the Salvation Army of Shreveport or the charity of the donor's choice.

I am so sorry to hear about the loss of Mr. Armstrong. He was one of my favorite customer at the bank. I looked forward to seeing him with that smile and pleasant personality. To the family "weeping may endure for the night but joy will come in the morning"

I'm so glad I was able to spend time with both of your parents Bobby Lou. I will always remember them as fun, generous, energetic, spirited, sports fans, and true Louisianans. They were so supportive of you and you were an awesome daughter. They will be missed but now they are together.

The Final Salute

Brothers in Arms, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged Hand Salutes as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.

This Hand Salute is the last that we shall render to Louis Palmer Armstrong our Brother-in-Arms. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for Lou. And to Lou it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the devoted and selfless service he rendered to his country during WW-II while serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps. Lou, we commend you for your honorable service. You are a true patriot, who served with honor and distinction. You upheld the finest qualities of an American patriot warrior: courage, commitment, generosity, sacrifice, love and devotion to family and country. You were a true friend. We bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at Ease. Rest in Peace.

On behalf of the 961 military veteran Legionnaires of Lowe-McFarlane Post 14 of the American Legion and the 233 veterans of VFW Post 2238 in Shreveport, Louisiana, we extend our sympathies and our condolences to Lou's family and loved ones.

Bobby Lou, I only got to meet your Daddy one time, but it was enough to leave a sweet impression on my heart! I know how much you loved them both. You were so right yesterday when you said that he's in Heaven with your mommy! I hope to see you soon! Love & miss you!
