Robert Stack D.V.M. Obituary

Robert J. Stack, D.V.M., left us on Friday February 8, 2013, surrounded by his loving family, to be reunited with

his beloved wife, Rosemary who he greatly missed for the last four years. He was, in the truest sense of the word, a good and decent man who led a full and purposeful life. He will be greatly missed by his children, grandchildren and by all who knew and loved him.

Robert was born on June 29, 1923 in Syracuse, New York. After graduating from Manhattan College he served a three year tour of duty in the Air Force before entering Cornell Veterinary College. Upon graduating from Cornell in 1950, Robert joined his father John in the veterinary practice known as the Stack Veterinary Hospital. The practice was originally located on Bellevue Avenue in Syracuse, New York, but later re-located to Velasko Road, in the Town of Onondaga where it continues today. Two of Robert's sons, R. Michael and Daniel continued the family tradition of practicing Veterinary Medicine and the Stack Veterinary Hospital recently celebrated its 100th anniversary, something Robert was extraordinary proud of. Long after his retirement, his many clients continued to fondly remember his years of dedicated service to their pets. Robert was a past president of the Central New York Veterinary Association and a long time member of Bellevue Country Club.

Robert was, however, most proud of all of his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. His life was centered around his family. It was a life filled with much love, laughter and compassion. He profoundly touched and shaped the lives of his eight children and was always there to guide them through the difficult times in their lives.

Robert is survived by his eight children, R. Michael (Charlene), John, Gerald (Barbara), Kevin, Colleen, Daniel (Julia), Mary Kay (John) and Rosemary, numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. He is also survived by his brothers, John and William as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Robert taught his children many lessons in life, about love, about having a fierce loyalty to one's family and the need for toughness in the face of adversity. In the end, he also taught us that death cannot destroy the dignity of a dignified man.

Calling hours will be held Tuesday 4-7 p.m at the Edward J. Ryan & Son Funeral Home, 3180 Bellevue Ave. A mass of Christian burial will be held Wednesday February 13 10 a.m at Most Holy Rosary. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery Dewitt.

We first met Dr. Stack almost 40 years ago, and he cared for all our cats over the years. He even came in one weekend and saved a stray we rescued after it was hit by a car. He was always both professional and caring. The world has lost a good man. Our condolences to his family...

My sadness extends to the Stack family...
I had the distinct privilege of knowing, working for, and having my animals cared for by Dr Stack. I was patched up more than once by Kevin's dad...when I did not want to face the wrath of my mother. My first job was cleaning animal cages at the hospital. I learned some life lessons from Dr Stack and have always held him, and will continue to hold him, in the highest level of respect.

A wonderful and compassionate man has left this earth. As a child my family took our first puppy to Dr. Stack. That was about 53 years ago. We have always felt like part of their family. Our deepest sympathy and prayers are with you all.

My family has taken our female Boston Terriers to Stack's practice for years. Dr Stack was a superb vet and a man of calm good humor and compassion - not only for the animals he treated but also for their human minders. His approach to the practice of medicine can be seen in both of his sons, one of whom is the doctor for my Boston who is currently asleep next to me on my (her) bed. He left a splendid legacy to people and their pets.

So sorry to hear of Bob's death. My young years in Syracuse include many memories of Bos's dad amd of course his three sons. . I got to pay a visit to Bob this summer when visiting his brother John and of course his conversation included wonderful stories of his children. May God Bless you all and I wish I could be there to express my sympathy in person.

We are very sorry for your family's loss. His legacy will live on in the community and well as his family. May happy memories give you peace and comfort in this time of sorrow. Please know that all of us animal lovers will treasure the "pawprint" he leaves behind in the veterinary hospital... there's no place better to go for compassionate, quality care of our fur-babies.

My heartfelt sympathies to the Stack family from Audrey (Craner). I was friends with Rosemary at Westhill, went to the Stack's house often to play, and of course we took our dogs to Dr. Stack only! Wonderful man, wonderful family.

Dear Mike, Dad and the Stack family

I am so saddened by the new regarding your father. As you know, my first interest in VM cam from taking our dogs to your grand father and your Dad as well as your uncle Bill were huge mentors for me before going to vet school as well as during and after that. Your dad hired me a few times to pinch-hit in the practice while you were on vacation.

Your father was a kind and gentle man as well as an excellent veterinarain. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your families at this difficult time. Unfortunately I am in Florida and thus unable to attend the funeral, but will attend Mass down here on Wednesday to pray for him and you.

The Manhattan College alumni community shares the grief, and is now praying for our fellow alumni and the family at this time. The Alumni Office has been informed. As well as the Jasper Jottings community that I personally can reach. We are all a little poorer now. "No man is an island, entire of itself ... any man's death diminishes me". We are sorry for your loss.

My heartfelt sympathy to the Stack Family. I remember as a child always going with my parents to Robert Stack's office with their birds, dogs, cats, and how my parents praised the care and compassion he had for any animal he treated, and that was 55 yrs ago, and I would not go anywhere else with any of my pets. He certainly was an upstanding and wonderful man, and has passed that on to his children. God Bless you Dr. Stack, and God watch over your children and families.
