George Smith Obituary

George A. Smith, 94, of Greensburg, died Saturday, Jan. 23, 2021. He was born Oct. 22, 1926, in Laughlintown, a son of the late John G. and Etta M. Phillippi Smith. He was a member of Good Shepherd Evangelical Lutheran Church in Greensburg. George served in the Army. He was a graduate of the Carnegie Institute of Technology, with a bachelor of science in electrical engineering. Prior to retirement, he was employed as a sales engineer for Erie City Iron Works, of Erie, and Mine Safety Appliances, of Monroeville. Later, he was self-employed, filing tax returns for small businesses. He was a generous, fun-loving, and gentle man with a deep Christian faith. He enjoyed travel, photography, puzzles and spending time at the cottage in Rector. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a daughter, Audrey E. Snell, and two brothers; Rev. J. Howard Smith and Gerald C. Smith. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Mary Ann Rodes Smith; a daughter, Linda R. Smith, of Cumberland, Md.; a son, Gordon A. Smith, and Denise Lawson, of Alexandria, Va.; three grandchildren, of whom he was extremely proud; Kirby A. Snell, of Chicago, Ill., Whitney L. Snell, of Chicago, Ill., and Tyler R. Snell, of Minneapolis, Minn.; a son-in-law, William Snell, of Kalamazoo, Mich.; and a number of nieces and nephews. Family and friends will be received from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at BARNHART FUNERAL HOME, 505 E. Pittsburgh St., Greensburg. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home. An additional celebration service will take place at a later date. The family wishes to acknowledge Denise Lawson, neighbors Ken and Melinda Hebrank and the staff of Promise Hospice, especially Trisha Quinn, for the quality and compassionate care that George received. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 501 Fairfield Drive, Greensburg, PA 15601. For online condolences, visit BarnhartFuneralHome.com.
