Dr. Neil Anthony Capretto, 62, of Beaver, passed away peacefully Saturday, June 9, 2018. Born Aug. 18, 1955, he was a son of the late Neil and Gloria Capretto and a member of First Presbyterian Church, Beaver. Neil served as the medical director of Gateway Rehabilitation Center. A graduate of Kiski Area High School and Allegheny College, where he excelled in both football and track, he graduated in 1981 from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and served his residency in psychiatry at St. Francis Medical Center, Pittsburgh. In 1985, he became a full-time staff psychiatrist at the Community Mental Health Center, Beaver County, and joined the staff of the Medical Center, Beaver. Dr. Capretto was board certified in both general psychiatry and addiction psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, and board certified in addiction medicine by the American Society of Addiction Medicine. He was active in numerous professional committees, including both the Allegheny and Beaver Counties of Overdose Prevention Coalition, and was a proud member of the ASAM, American Society of Addiction Medicine. Neil loved sports and was an avid golfer. A supporter of Allegheny College, he served as vice president of Friends of Allegheny. His greatest passion was his family. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and loved to eat out and travel with his wife. He will be sadly missed by his wife, Amy Friel Capretto; two sons, Andrew (Jessica) Capretto, of Peters Township, and Peter (Jessica) Capretto, of Nashville, Tenn.; his twin sister, Audrey (Dave) Miller, of Vandergrift; two granddaughters, Eliana and Adeline Capretto; and his wife's family, including a mother-in-law, Judith Brandt, of Shaler, a brother-in-law, Kevin (Mary Jane) Friel, of Millvale, a sister-in-law, Mary (Blaine) DiCenzo, of Gibsonia, and his godson and nephew, Ethan DiCenzo. Neil also leaves behind his cherished cats, Gypsy and Rascal, as well as many beloved friends and colleagues.
Friends will be received from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday and 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in NOLL FUNERAL HOME INC., 333 Third St., Beaver, PA 15009. Here's to John cougar mellencamp,Peter Gabriel,Mariah Carey,Allman Bros, salt n pepa, Bryan Adams, and the many hundreds more tunes we used to listen to together. We were best friends for 24 years. No matter what came your way or my way we kept up our friendship. You were the salt of the earth,Neil. A pure, innocent person through and through.I talked to you 2 weeks before you died and I did not know that was the last time I would speak to you but in a way that's probably a good thing.I love you my friend and I'll love you forever..until we meet again then we can discuss all of our little idiosyncrasies of Neil Anthony, you were one of a kind, and time is just a linear number as far as me and you.. you used to say that to me but it's kind of true. You fought a good fight and I'll see you on the other side someday my friend. Don't go chasing waterfalls.. unless they're heavenly waterfalls and then dive right in. I miss you my friend I'll miss you forever. Rest in peace and relax your life was so hectic before this just take it easy. You will be gravely missed.

Not many people on earth had the compassion and humbleness of Neil. He was one in a million it seems. Never heard a bad thing out of his mouth about the most troubled humans he worked with. My deepest sympathy and condolences to his family. The drug and alcohol field is left with a void I don't know if anyone can ever fill it. Rest In Peace Dr.C thank you for saving so many lives and fighting for addicts lives when most people think we shouldn't.

My deepest sympathy to the Capretto family. Neil was a classmate of mine and an incredible athlete back in the day. We played football together in high school and he went pound to pound. He will be in my thoughts always.

Neil was a psych resident at St.Francis at the same time that I worked there in the early 80's- the Dr. Twerski days. He was so friendly to EVERYONE- unpretentious. This news has sadden so many of us from that St. Francis era. Rest well Neil- your work on this earth, very well done.

I also had the honor of working with this kind, loving and humble man. I'm reminded of one of the definitions of a Saint: "They make us want to be a better person."

For me, Neil was a Saint.

My condolences to his family. I'm so sorry for all of us, for this loss at such a young age. --- Sam Donaldson

I met with Dr. Capretto in 1980 and continued weekly office visits until he left St Frances. The very first day of several visits to Gateway from 2010 relapsing after 30 years. We recognized each other in the bathroom and a couple days later i went to his office and spent some time reminising. He was very busy but made the time for a get-together. Neil had ditched his thick black-rimmed glasses and sported a new hairdo.
I finally got time in and started making more progress before he left for Beaver. He was always more of a therapist with constant positive input and reinforcement . He was incredibly real. Could go on and on but want to say how fortunate i was to have Dr. Capretto in my life. I wish his family and friends all the best.

Our loss, Heaven's gain. I am proud to say I have worked under this gentle man for many years at one of his outpatient sites. He is truly one of a kind, so respected and loved. I know he is at peace, and still working hard to change the world. You rest now Neil, and know that we will never forget you, your dedication and generosity will continue to inspire us.

I had the pleasure of meeting Neil very early in his fight against cancer. Upon our first meeting I knew both he and his beautiful wife Amy were special people. We fought this battle together for well over a year while enduring chemo, radiation and other dreadful services that come along with this journey. After losing contact for a short while, we ended up across the hall from each other at the hospital shortly before his passing; Amy still beautiful and Neil still that sweet caring man I had first met. I thank God for the privilege of meeting Neil and I thank Him even more for allowing me to tell him, until we meet again, my friend during his final days. My heart goes out to Amy, Andrew and Peter. I pray that God blesses and keeps you during your time of grief.

We live a world far poorer for Neil's absence, even as his people-focused professional standards are celebrated, studied, and emulated. All I can add to the well-deserved tributes about the positive difference he made in the lives of others is that this practice started early, an observation certain to be echoed by other classmates and teammates from Allegheny College.
