JO ANN YATES (Age 74)
Died peacefully in her home on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC on Friday, February 17, 2017. She leaves her sons, Thomas of Washington, DC, Michael (Katie), of Burke, VA; two granddaughters; her mother Marvis; her brothers David and Joe; former husband, Robert Yates and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death, by her father Joe Grewenig; her sister Carole; and her sister-in-law Julie. Relatives and friends may call at Collins Funeral Home, 500 University Boulevard West, Silver Spring, MD, (Valet Parking), Wednesday, February 22, from 7 to 9 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 8th and N. Streets, N.W., Washington, DC, on Thursday, February 23, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. Interment will be at her family home in Elgin, IL at a later date. Donations may be made in her honor to the Metropolitan Washington Ear, Inc. (www.washear.org). www.COLLINSFUNERALHOME.com

I worked with JoAnn at Riverdale Elementary School and was so saddened to hear of her passing. JoAnn and I were friends first then collegues. She admired my work ethics and concern for children as much as I admired her determination. I could tell many stories of us riding in her car (while she puffed on her cigg) looking for homes of students who had not been to school. Knocking on wrong doors (in wrong neighborhoods) to her passing gas in my office (twice). We both just laughed and laughed at that one. I told her I was going to get shot fooling around with an ole fat white lady wearing a Colombo Trench coat. To which she replied,"you may call me old, you may call me Colombo and you can call me white, but you had better not call me fat!! I loved JoAnn. She encouraged, supported and cared about what was going on in my life and I hers. She loved her boys and Katie. Rest in peace my dear friend.
