Dr. JOHN FREDERICK MERMEL (Age 79)
Of McLean, VA, died in San Diego, CA on Monday March 3, 2014. Beloved husband of the late Virginia Maribee Myers Mermel; father of M. Myers Mermel of New York, NY and Dr. Cecilia Maribee MacCallum of Lynchburg, VA. Grandfather of Grace, Matthew, Lilly, John and Elizabeth; brother of Yvonne Rodler and Marilyn Disbrow. A Memorial Service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 29, 2014, at Walker Chapel United Methodist Church, 4102 N. Glebe Road, Arlington VA. Interment private. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to the Dr. John F. Mermel Memorial Fund, at the School of Medicine at George Washington University, Attn: M.T. Pena, School of Medicine and Health Sciences, George Washington University, 2030 M. St. NW, Suite 4054, Washington, D.C. 20036.www.collinsfuneralhome.com

My deepest sympathy to the family of John and Ginny. I was part of the Georgetown faculty when Ginny was there and appreciated what a lovely couple the two were. The legacy of a life well lived is a treasure. John's dedication to his medical profession, his country, and his family were evident and obvious to all who knew him. I was proud to say he was my cousin, and that we were able to renew family memories in the last several years. My wife, Elaine, and I send our sympathy to his family members across the country. He will remain in our hearts.

Both Maria and I have known John from the day we both started medical school in 1956, he later was an usher in our wedding. I was about to have dinner with him but had to cancel because of his illness. To John's children we must say how sorry we are to have lost such a dear friend, our sympathy to them. We will miss him.
