I love this time of year because I get to teach my team what we call "St, John's" and I get to tell my players about Joe Gallagher. He truly was a master teacher/coach whose lessons went well beyond the court. Thanks Joe...love ya Coach....

Carol and Steve, my most sincere and heartfelt condolences on the passing of your Father /Father-In-Law. You were blessed to have him so long. Rest assured that despite no longer being with you physically, I am certain he will be in your hearts and thought eternally. May he rest in peace. Fondly, Joseph P. Hickey (Puck).

Coach Gallagher was a few years ahead of my father at St. Johns in the late '30s and I'll never forget some of the stories
my father would tell. My relationship w/ Coach, started in 1962, when I attended his basketball camp at St. Johns. He and his partner Morgan Wooten left an impression on me that has lasted all my life. A few years later, as a student at St. Johns myself, I came to know Coach Gallagher as a true teacher, mentor, and a man who would go out of his way to help any student who would reach out for advice. My deepest, and most sincere heartfelt sympathy goes out to his family at this time of loss.

I was 10 years old, in George Washington Hospital and a few days into my stay, Joe Gallagher became my roommate - he had been in an auto accident. What I remember was how he talked to me as an adult. Even asked if I liked playing football. When I told him I did, he asked if I was Catholic. When I told him I was Jewish, he said (paraphrasing), "No problem. We have Jewish kids at St. Johns. You can play there." That moment gave me a great feeling of optimism which I still have today. My condolences on the loss of a great man.

Joe was a tremendous competitor. We had the privilege of having his son Jay play for us at Mount Saint Mary's University while I was coaching there. I always looked forward to talking to Joe after the games. I thought of him as a friend.
May he rest in peace. Coach Jim and Dottie Phelan

Joe was a great coach, teacher and a wonderful role model. Played against him while at DeMatha and worked at the Basketball camp for several years with Morgan Wooten and Joe. Much later in life I got to see Joe many times at the Stein Room in Leisure World while my Dad was still living there. What a great story teller he was and continued to be. The DC area loses a great soul but it is heaven's gain. Rest in Peace Joe. I was so privledged to have known you. God Bless !

Having played for Mr Gallagher I would have to say besides my father he was the greatest influence and teacher in my life. Playing for Mr Gallagher must have Ben similar to playing for the great Vince Lombardi after many decades I still think about him almost everyday. He used basketball to teach his players so much about life and being a man.Honesty responsibility, teamwork, being a good american, love of family and God were just afew of tthe lessons that I learned, We learned to play the game with class and conduct our selfs as St Johns Cadets on and off the court,Having played three years with His son Jay I can only imagine how tough he was in his playing days as Jay was as tough as they came,I would like to say that he treated us all the same as I heard that lLombardi treated his players,This was during the late 60s And early 70s as he and Morgan probably did not know how much they were appreciated and needed and the impact that they had on America
They were true trail blazers for equality and great Americans thank you
