KATHLEEN OLIVERIO Obituary

KATHLEEN MOORE OLIVERIO
Kathleen "Katie" Moore Oliverio, age 81, of Bethany Beach Delaware and formerly of Silver Spring, Maryland, passed peacefully in her home on January 4, 2015, surrounded and embraced by her loving family members, after waging a courageous battle with cancer. A vivacious, fun-loving and fiercely loyal Irish-American woman who hailed from Cincinnati, Ohio, she was the devoted and cherished wife of 61 years to Dr. Vincent T. Oliverio, also of Bethany Beach. Known to her family and many life-long friends as "Katie O", she was small in stature, but considered a giant of a person who possessed an indomitable spirit and zest for life, family, work and especially her Roman Catholic faith. Katie has left an enduring legacy that spans four generations and that has touched innumerable friends, colleagues and acquaintances alike. In addition to her husband Vincent, she is survived by her 11 children, John (Jennifer), Catherine (Kurt), Mary, Peggy Konieczka (Quinn), Nancy Farinacci (Dino), Matthew (Kathleen), Patricia Gallorini, Martin (Missy), Joseph (Jeanette), James (Antoinette) and Monica Stewart (Brent); 42 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. She worked as a registered emergency room nurse for 24 years at Holy Cross Hospital and volunteered at various health care clinics in Florida, Delaware and Maryland following her retirement. Her greatest and proudest achievement and joy in life was her vast, but close-knit and adoring family. All of her family delighted immeasurably in spending precious time with their "Granny", especially frolicking with her and "Papa" at the seashore where Katie found great peace and comfort. Throughout her adult life, Katie was an active, dedicated volunteer and daily communicant of St. Andrew the Apostle Parish in Silver Spring and St. Ann's Parish in Bethany Beach. Her renowned and inspirational toasts or "words of wisdom" will continue to be a source of strength and inspiration for those who had the pleasure and privilege of knowing her.  Calling hours will be held at Collins Funeral Home, on Thursday, January 8, 2015 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., 500 University Blvd. West, Silver Spring, Maryland, 20901. A Mass of Christian Burial celebrating Katie's amazing life will be said from St. Andrew the Apostle Church at 11600 Kemp Mill Road, Silver Spring, Maryland, 20902, on Friday, January 9, 2015 at 10 a.m., with interment at Gate of Heaven Cemetery at 13801 Georgia Ave., Silver Spring, Maryland 20906. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made to the American Cancer Society.

To the Oliverio Family: I had the pleasure of working with Katie O in the ER at Holy Cross Hospital for many years. When I heard of her passing, the first image that came to me was her smile - what a beautiful person she was! The second image that came to me was her walking down the corridor - where did she get so much energy?! I walk very fast, and have longer legs, but even I could not keep up with her! It's hard to believe that any illness could catch up with her, let alone overtake her - she was a tiny tower of might. I have no doubt of where she is now (she always wore a halo of soft white curls!, and I am also sure that the Good Lord is exhausted just hearing her stories and with trying to keep up with her!

May the love that everyone had for Katie O wrap you up and give you peace during this very difficult time. Remember the great times with her, I know I will!

To all the Oliverios, I want to express my deepest sympathies for the loss of your Mother. Our families have been intertwined for three generations; as founding families of St. Andrews both living on Nairn Rd. to continued neighbor status on Springlake Dr. I also had the pleasure of working at Holy Cross as a nurse with your Mom. She was an inspiration to so many and she will certainly be missed.

To Catie and the entire Oliverio family,

Mere words cannot express either the joyous fervor I experienced meeting and knowing Granny or the heartfelt sorrow of her passing. She was surely blessed by her fantastic family as we, her friends, were by knowing and loving her too.

Words escape me as I ponder how dear Katherine was to her family & the magnitude of loss you must be suffering. When working with Dr. Oliverio at DEA, NCI I recall how obvious it was that he deeply loved Katherine and how important she was to her family. May God's mercy and love comfort you during this challenging time.

I only met Kathleen two years ago but was able to see right away that she was a woman with great spirit, energy and joy. Just looking at her made me smile. What a beautiful woman and from what I gathered through her son Matt and his wife, Kathy, a beautiful, full and gracious life. Now she is home. Love and sympathy, Angie and Tony Margiotta
