MARY MEYER Obituary

MARY ELIZABETH DIMMICK MEYER  (Age 67)
Of Silver Spring, Maryland, passed away on January 30, 2016 at Suburban Hospital following a stroke while working at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Mary was born on October 30, 1948 in East Stroudsburg, PA to her parents Lester and Hilda Dimmick. After graduation from East Stroudsburg High School, Mary attended St. Luke''s School of Nursing in Bethlehem, PA becoming a Registered Nurse upon graduation in 1969. During her almost 50 years as a nurse, Mary spent the last 26 years working at NIH in Bethesda, MD where her professionalism and concern for the welfare of her patients made a difference in countless lives. Mary was a force to be reckoned with and anyone who met her quickly grasped her no nonsense and direct approach, indicative of her character, values, and intellect. She was fiercely protective of her children and those she loved, while showing the grace, generosity, and compassion to care for others. Mary was passionate about her dogs and loved the mountains and water. She spent countless days and vacations at her cottage on the Severn River. One of her favorite activities was kayaking during the summer with her dogs, friends, and family. Mary will be missed by her beloved dog Lucy. She is survived by her three sons, John (wife Kelly), Matthew (wife Precious), and Peter (wife Kristine), four grandchildren, and three step-grandchildren. A memorial service will be Wednesday, February 3, 2016 at 11 a.m. at Collins Funeral Home, 500 University Blvd West, Silver Spring, MD. Family will meet with friends 30 minutes prior. Mary''s three sons will conduct a private interment ceremony in accordance with her wishes. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to lab-rescue.org. www.collinsfuneralhome.com

My deepest sympathy for the loss of your beloved mother. Mary was a caring, meticulous RN who always strived for the best. I enjoyed talking with her about our mutual love of dogs and her commitment to the nursing profession. Mary always had high standards which I respected. I will miss her.
Hoping that you will find comfort in the happy memories and that she lives with you in your heart forever.

I am very sorry to hear of the passing of a very dear friend from High School.. Mary and I had quite a few adventures together. I spent a lot of time at her home and knew her parents well. My brother, Bill, and her were also good friends..
RIP Mary... You will be missed!

I have a lot of fond memories of the wonderful nurse and person Mary Meyer was. Patients were always her first and foremost priority at work. She was their caregiver and advocate. Fun memories from volunteering at an Alzheimer research benefit ride, and working in both Aging and Mental Health Institutes. She is and will be missed. All the best to the Family.

Before retiring, I mentored your mom at NIH as she transferred from the children's to the adult's unit. She was a fine psychiatric nurse, sharp and meticulous about all procedures and protocols.

We shared a love of dogs (at the time I had 5!). We gleefully anticipated the arrival of the NIH therapy dogs on the unit. I also remember her searching online for Lab rescues, until she found her beloved Lucy. She would come back from each lake retreat reporting on Lucy's improving kayaking talents.

We also enjoyed a passion for shopping. Your mother loved her QVC!! She always bought me the most unique, elaborate Christmas ornaments. And who could forget the wine, bearing Lucy's image? Mary also couldn't get enough of my chocolate babka. She encouraged me to bake more and more cookies at Christmas for her grandkids as well as to add her favorite, snickerdoodles, to my holiday repertoire. Every year, when I make them, I think of your mom with much fondness.

I will always remember Mary with much love and keep you boys and the grandkids she so loved in my thoughts and prayers.
