I first met Steve as an eye patient many years ago. It was obvious then what a kind and compassionate man he was. I know he will be missed by many people, and I know many join me in sending prayers and condolences to Virginia and the family.

Dearest Elgin Family,
I was sorry to hear Dr. Elgin had passed away. I have fond memories of him. I recall a nice talk on the beach about history and family and will always remember the excellent care our family got when he was our eye doctor. My thoughts are with all of you.

Among his other gifts, Steve was an active member of St John's parish in Georgetown and his service on the Vestry, as a Warden, and as volunteer for many acticvities, including the often thankless task of serving on the Finance Committee, will be remembered by many of his friends of that era. He was an example of enlightened lay leadership, always managing to keep a cool head when others were steaming hot, and as a result was a counselor and adviser to many. I know he will be missed and recalled as one of the parish's fine gentlement and servants. He was invaluable help to me when I served as rector long ago.
