Father Gatto and another young priest Joshua Mundell were assigned to Sacred Heart Parish at the same time in the mid 1950's. I was a young altar server then in the sixth grade, 1957.

Our heartfelt gratitude to our beloved Msgr. Vincent Gatto, who is truly God's blessing for the Church and for all the people whose lives he had spiritually touched especially for us the Sisters of Mary and the children and graduates of the Girlstowns and Boystowns whom he had visited several times. Monsignor, you have been a part of our lives and you will always be, though we will miss you physically but we believe you will continue to support us together with Venerable Al in heaven. We thank and praise God and Mother Mary for you. Your fidelity to God and great devotion to Mother Mary, your true love for the people esp. to the poor will always be our inspiration. For all Msgr. Gatto's relatives and friends, you've lost a father and a friend but you and all of us have found now an intercessor in heaven. Msgr. rest in peace, count on our prayers and please pray for us.

My condolences to his family, fellow priests, and the Archdiocese of Washington. Unfortunately, I am unable to attend the funeral services on Monday. I fondly remember Msgr. Gato from many, many years ago in 1964 when he was assigned to Sacred Heart Parish in Washington DC. Then Father Gatto was in charge of the training of altar boys. He taught us the then used Latin responses for serving Mass, and gave us our little red Mass serving booklets. Amazingly, I still have that red booklet.
Msgr. Gato was always personable and patient. I also remember him as a really snappy dresser (as much as priests could be) with his french cuffs, cuff links, and the black loaffers with tassels on them. Always retained fond memories of him. Followed him from afar over the years through the Catholic Standard as I attended and completed high school, university, and law school. Then through my career and now retirement. Still consider myself one of his boys.
May the Lord receive him in a loving embrace, and angels sing his name in loving gratitude for his priestly service and life. May he rest in peace. Well done!

Our thoughts and prayers are with Monsignor Gatto's family and friends. May he Rest In Peace and join in Heaven with our Lord. Many of us will forever remember him as an educator of children and as part of our families. I was blessed to be one of his students at Our Lady of Mercy in Potomac. Incredible legacy that he left on this community and earth.

I remember Msgr Gator as being an incredible priest at Holy Cross. He gave me the understand like no other. And, he was the only one that I saw kneel after communion. I'm so going to miss him - but he is certainly going to the right place.

Monsignor Gatto's musical talents will always be remembered as he agreed to sing the Eucharistic Acclamations with our Mercy school choir for our school liturgy in the 'old' church. Monsignor also gave a piano recital with pianists Msgr. Mark Brennan and a Mercy student many years ago. We love you dearly Monsignor Gatto. God Bless You!
