Bob Legler Obituary

Born a natural Corn Husker, Bob lived a full life. A husband, father, brother, grandfather and friend Bob enjoyed each of his roles in life. Beyond his personal life it is perhaps fair to say Bob's true love was serving his country, from US Coast Guard, Merchant Marine, United Nations and the US Army. His aspirations of being a pilot lead him to the NASA Space program as an aerospace engineer, which he served 38 years. As one of a hand full of people to ever serve Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, Sky Lab Shuttle Missions and the space station Bob was an icon to his peers. With so many life experiences Bob was awarded flight historian by NASA in 2000 and the only person to receive such an award. Other awards include Space Flight awareness honoree, public Service Medal and many more. Bob's hobbies included his involvement in youth soccer. In 1985 Bob was the 1st to be inducted into the South Texas Youth Soccer Association and was a credited by many for founding youth soccer in Texas. For many `Failure is not an option" is simply a random term but Bob actually lived the dramatic experience and more that likely no one person is fully aware of. Being a humble gentleman Bob left a legacy to his family to remember and rejoice in his life's achievements. Bob is survived by his wife Maggie T. Legler, and sons, Alain R. Legler, Joseph A., Legler and grandchildren, Remy A., Jade A., Isabella N., and Noah A. Services will be held 11:am Tuesday, march 20th, 2007 at Saint Lukes United Methodist Church located at 3471 Westheimer.

I consider it a great privilege and honor to have known and worked with Bob for so many years. We worked together as TechReps, beginning in 1961 and continuing until I left the Space program in 1980.
We were both Corhuskers, and were born about 20 miles apart in Nebraska. My memories include work, parties, and the retirement lunches at the Outback. We all will miss him very much.
Our family offers our condolences to the family. Bob, in my memories, was most of all a very good family man.

Bob and I go back a long way in the space program. The first time I remember having a meeting with Bob was when he ask me to come over and brief him and his people on orbital mechanics and the art of space rendezvous. This time frame was in the mid to early 60s, as I recall. The fact was he knew just about as much as I did but, he always gave me the credit!

That was Bob! Always giving credit and telling stories that he did not want to get into print but, wanted to tell them anyway. He always had a crowd listening, including me. I wish now that I would have gotten more stories from him into print but, he said he was doing a book and that a lot of the stories might show up!

I will miss Bob a lot. He was a true friend, always time for a beer, fantastic memory, great speaker, could always produce an interesting story and was a true (Our) Manned Space Flight Operations Historian. We have lost a lot of Operations History facts and figures that I am afraid a lot went with Bob plus Bob and all those other things.

PS One of Bob’s true Love’s was Manned Spaceflight Operations and it's people!

Bob was a great friend. We worked together as Flight Controllers on the Gemini and Apollo programs from 1964 to 1995. We had many great experiences. We made several trips together including to Trinidad to check the operations support on the Tracking ship Rose Knot Victor and to Australia to support AS-204 first flight of the Lunar Module.

Bob was good natured and enjoyed a good joke, even if it was on him. I was responsible for many of these jokes, but he and always got even.

I loved Bob and will miss him.

I will sorely miss discussing and reminiscing early manned spaceflight history with Bob, sometimes arguing about accuracy. But wait, I have more questions to ask him….

I will miss the comfort that I felt with this good man.

I will sorely miss my friend and fellow flight controller, Bob Legler.

I already miss him.

As a Shuttle Flight Controller, I will never forget Bob's very emotional recounting of the Apollo XIII mission. It showed to me that there really were very human and caring people who worked to get us to the Moon, and back!
I worked with Bob from the very beginning with the FOD Chili Cookoff Space Trivia competitiion. He made the historical events in the competition come alive with with his very human, humorous and light-hearted manner. I have the distinct honor of carrying on the Space Trivia tradition he started at the cookoff. We will honor his memory every year at this event.

Bob was a walking encyclopedia of space knowledge and also had a great sense of humor..I spent lots of hours in the SPAN enjoying both. Teach 'em how to fry a turkey up there Bob.

Bob was a rarity in the annals of human spaceflight - a joyful cheerleader whose unabashed love of the space program was manifest and abundant. No one was more overtly enthusiastic of the program, no one took greater pride in understanding the minutae and details of each mission, and no one had a more ready laugh with which to celebrate the latest mission triumph. Bob was, in a real sense, part of the fabric of Mission Control, even part of its soul. He was a friend, and he will be forever missed.

I was privileged to work with Bob for many years on many programs. We shared having been Philco Tech Reps. I could always rely on Bob for hard to find info. His enthusiam for his work was obvious.
I will miss my good friend.

Bob was very passionate and knowledgeble about space flight history. It was a pleasure working with him on the Apollo Flight Operations Reunion Books. He was one of the good guys.

Bob mentored all of the new flight controllers with his wisdom, knowledge, but more importantly his passion for human space flight. Thanks Bob for all you did for us.

Houston, we have a problem. Bob Legler has left the scene.

Bob was a great mentor and knew how to work hard on being 120% smart on his systems. Even 35 years after the Apollo missions, Bob could recite technical LM details better than most his age. He was also one of the better experts on Space Trivia, he began a tradition 25 years ago that is still present at today's Chili Cookoff events. Bob and I got to film in the Mini Series "SPACE" together as background actors, based on the Michener book of an Apollo 18 mission, I guess we can say Bob finally got into Space. We'll miss you Bob.

Thanks Bob for having such a wonderful family. It has been an honor to know your son, Alain, all these years. Apparently, you did as well with your children as you did in your career. God speed.

I first met Bob in the youth soccer program where he worked to constantly improve the system for our kids. It wasn't till years later that our paths crossed at NASA. It didn't surprise me at all when he returned to 4N after he retired. He is already missed.

I have admired Bob Legler for many years - a wealth of information about the programs that many of us have had the privilege of working on, Gemini, Apollo, and Shuttle. There is a kinship shared by every person that was blessed to be a part of those monumental accomplishments. One of our team members is now in a different orbit, however we will continue to remember Bob and tell his stories for years to come. His light will never go out.

I came to work at MSC during Gemini and met Bob while working in Mission Control during Apollo. We shared a strong interest in program history and it was Bob who tracked me down in Wisconsin and made sure I received anniversary notifications and information on colleagues. The Apollo 35th anniversary history book will be a lasting tribute to Bob.

Bob was one of the original Philco Tech Reps. These were the people who helped establish the original US network of communications and tracking sites around the world. They came together for the Gemini, Agena and Apollo programs. They established requirements for the data displays and telemetry processing. They were among the first of what became the flight controller culture. They helped established the core values of knowledge, procedures, rules - competence. Bob was a persistant worker, a teacher, a mentor; someone you could count on; a person who sought out the right things to do and did them. In human space flight, Bob saw and did it all. He was a tireless promoter of MOD and its history and was the key element in the MOD re-union efforts over the last many years. For nearly 40 years, I have been a friend and an admirer; he was a respected colleague and, above all, a gentleman.

I have many fond memories of Bob. His love of human space flight was evident to all who worked with him. He was always so happy and upbeat -- a man who truely loved his work. His Apollo Reunion Books reflected this love. We will miss him but will always remember his contributions.

I knew Bob to be a tireless collector of space information -- after every flight you could count on a visit from Bob. I am so glad that I was privileged to know such a fine man. He will be missed
