Corey Engen Obituary

1916-2006 Corey Engen passed away peacefully on May 9, 2006 in Orem, UT. Corey was born in Mjondalen, Norway on March 30, 1916 to Trond and Martha Oen Engen. He emigrated to the United States in March of 1933 with his widowed mother. He married Norma Bleak in Salt Lake City on Sept. 10, 1938, they were sealed in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on Oct. 3, 1956. Corey, with his two brothers, AIf and Sverre, were pioneers in the ski industry in the intermountain west and the United States. He competed on the U.S. Olympic team in 1948, was elected to the National Ski Hall of Fame in 1973 and continued to actively compete until 1987 at age 71. He helped develop the Brundage Mountain Ski Resort in McCall, Idaho. His greatest joy in the sport was coaching and working with young skiers. Eleven national champions, including his own son, David, and several Olympians were produced from his local teams. Corey loved his native Norway, but he was also very proud of his U.S. citizenship. Corey and Norma lived for over 50 years in McCall, Idaho, where he was President of the McCall Rotary Club in 1959, was a member of the McCall Memorial Hospital Board, served in the Boy Scout organization and the McCall Chamber of Commerce. They moved to Lindon, Utah in 1995, and lived there until Norma passed away in Dec., 2002. Since May, 2003, Corey has resided at the Courtyard at Jamestown in Provo. Corey was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many positions. His last position was that of a faithful home teacher. Corey's family was of the greatest importance to him. He and Norma were wonderful examples of love, integrity, kindness, hard work and generosity. They had two children, Carol (Gary) Beus, Washington, Utah, and David Engen, McCall, Idaho. They had eight grandchildren, Steven (Dena) Beus, Roger (Karen) Beus, Alan Beus (deceased), Brian (Caroline) Beus, Susan (Scott) Herbst, Richard Beus, Deborah (Daniel) Snyder and Erik (Melanie) Engen. They also had 15 great-grandchildren. The family would like to thank Dr. Peter Duros and the staff at Orchard Park Care Center and Carl Lopez and his staff at Health Watch for their kind care. And a very special thanks to the wonderful staff at the Courtyard at Jamestown for making Corey's last few years so comfortable. Graveside Services will be held Saturday, May 13, 2006 at 11 am in the Larkin Sunset Gardens Cemetery, 1950 E. 10600 So., Sandy. The family will receive friends Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Larkin Sunset Gardens Mortuary and Saturday from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. prior to services. We send our love and thanks as we remember a great man!

We are very grateful for the contribution the Engen Brothers have brought to our skiing heritage. Our family has enjoyed many years of our father, Edwin G. Gibbs (Peruvian Lodge, Alta, UT)sharing stories from the early skiing days and the deeply rooted friendship made.

I personally enjoyed putting names and faced together at the Marriott Library Ski Affair. It was because of the many faces I recognized there, that I was able to make the connection that my mother, Betty Babcock, and Corey were neighbors at Jamestown. I always smiled to you from a distance.

Know that we are so thankful for the good life and heritage left for us!

We love you!

It was a thrill for me to know the Engen family...My father Axel Andresen was also proud to be assosiated with him through the years. One of my fondest memories was when my mother and I used to go and visit grandma Engen( Corey's mother). I was but a small boy, but remember her well.

Corey and Norma Engen were great friends to our family in McCall. They made us welcome: we felt very special as they shared themselves from their hearts. To feel their graciousness was a joy. Corey was a deeply good gentleman who lifted others by his optimism and friendly interest. I'm glad I knew this good man! My memory of him will hold a very dear place to me.

Corey was our home teacher for years in Lindon. He was always so sweet and a true friend to our family. We will miss him, and wish the family peace knowing he is with our Saviour Jesus Christ.

I would like to express my condolences to your family at this time. My parents, Randi and Kjell Bjorge admired and respected the contribution the Engen brothers made to our country as Norwegian Americans. My mother was excited to honor them at the Bauta Stone she created for the Norwegian section in the Peace Garden in Salt Lake. Your family was very kind and gracious to my mother as the ceremonies were arranged and took place. I hope you find some confort in the memories of Corey and knowing that so many respected him. Best wishes to you all, Sylvia Bjorge
