Hi grandpa. I didn't know you very long, i was just a toddler. I only know one thing about you... you had a lot of people that loved you. I just wish i could have been lucky enough to know you just a little more than i did. I love you no matter how much I remember of you.

Dad,
I miss you everyday. There isn't a day that goes by that I don't think about you. I have your red and black checkered wool jacket hanging on my dining room chair because it reminds me of you (as if I don't already have many others). I have read all these other entries only to make me cry as I have been reaffirmed of the fact that you were a great man, loved and remembered by many.
I love You,
Tom

Hello Scharlau family,
Bill it has been a week since your funeral service, you would have been proud, I do believe. We enjoyed the video slide show the funeral home provided from the pictures the family shared with everyone. I know your days of suffering have ended, as in heaven you will not feel all that back pain and the other pains you were having to endure, this is the one reflection to be thankful for, with your passing. You were always kind to us, not to mention that you helped Chuck gain insight to becoming a county employee, so many years ago. We thank you for that!!!!!! Thank you for letting us enjoy our vacation time at your Lemington home with Pat,Jeanne, & other friends. There are many things I am thankful for, and knowing you and your family has been a real plus for my family. You and your family will continue to be in our prayers and thoughts as you have always been. May you be at rest, you can go gambling anytime you want, fishing, hunting, whatever you put a mind to and ENJOY every minute of it. Please be at ease as I know that Lois, Sherry, Mike, Pat, Tom, and the grandkids will be fine as they will be looking out for each other. We had already left the funeral parlor when your family saluted you with a Wild Turkey toast, but I heard it was a good one. (:D)
Warmly, Paula & Chuck Rein

Dear Scharlow Family,

Am very sorry to learn of your loss. In 1978, I transferred from Milwaukee County General Hospital to the Jail to work in the Medical Section there. To say I was frightened and unsure of working in a correctional setting is a definite understatement. Deputy Scharlow made me feel comfortable, safe & better about the decision I had made to become a Jail nurse. All of his family are in my prayers.

Grampa,

I can't begin to express how terribly I'm going to miss you...you were the only Grampa I've ever known and you were always there for me whenever I needed anything. I am so happy to believe that you are in a place where you're no longer sick, a place where there are winning slot machines, where you can fish while watching the sun set anytime you want. I will always think of you, every day, but you'll be especially remembered when I get the guts to do another shot of "Wild Turkey" in your honor. I also hope I can honor you by getting a deer every deer season because you were always so proud of me (all two times) when I brought home the baby deer and "Sylvia." I will always love you.

Until we meet again...

I worked with Bill on the Sheriff's department in several different locations, the last being "Writs".
He was just plain good . . . . I mean all around. He stuck his nose out when he didn't have to, stood up to the brass when other's wouldn't, and made sound judgments repeatedly. I learned from that.
The writ section was a special place to work, Bill was one those who made it that way.
I'm glad Bill was with us so long but I'm sad at his passing.

Dear Bill,
No one will ever know or understand what it meant to have you in my life for the last 32 years. You always made me feel like part of the family even though I was just a daughter in law. I will be for ever grateful. Thank you Billy, I love you.

My condolences to the Scharlau family from one who worked with Bill for many years, when he was a deputy and later as a subcontractor to us. He definitely was a good guy and one of a kind, and always gave his all. He and Jim Pinter are in our prayers and memories. After all is said and done, "all we have are our memories"

As a young Deputy I had the good fortune and honor to be trained by, and work with Bill. I will always warm-heartedly reflect on the time that we worked together.

He will be missed, and will always be remembered as a gentleman. The Deputy Sheriff community has lost a great spirit.

Dear Mrs. Scharlau, I am sorry to hear of your loss. We at M&I will all miss Mr. Scharlau. I have thought of you both over the many years since we last spoke, and appreciated both of your kindness to me. Years ago you opened up your cabin for my family to use. My condolences to you and your family.

After meeting Bill's son Pat in 1998 when I first relocated to Wisconsin from Philadelphia, Bill and his family immediately took me in as one of their own knowing that my entire family still resided on the east coast. I will always remember the love that Bill gave me, treating me as though I was his own son. Bill and his family have always made me feel as though I was a Scharlau. Bill always made Christmas special for me, inviting me to join his family every year to celebrate the holiday together as a family. I will miss him dearly and will honor him by never forgetting him. To me, he will always be "Wild Bill". My sympathies go out to Bill's entire family, my family.

To Deputy Scharlau's wife and family,

When I was a youngster back in the early 70's, I spent many of days on my summer vacation at the safety building visiting my dad, Deputy Bill Richards in I believe it was Rm. #310. I had the good fortune of meeting "Scharlau" at that time. They all called each other by their last names. He was very kind and generous to me , they would always give me change to go to the candy machine. I also remember my dad speaking of him. As much as they could in their profession I believe they enjoyed working together. You all have my deepest Sympathies and I hope in some small way my remembering him , from so long ago lets you know that he did touch many peoples lives.
