Michael Gaborsky Obituary

The world became a better place on January 11, 1949, when Michael Peter Gaborsky was born in Kittery, Maine.

When Michael passed away on November 17, 2005, the world changed again. As the son of a Lt. Col. in the Army, Mike lived many places before the family settled in Milwaukee in 1960. Michael attended St. Monica's Grade School and Nicolet High School. Prior to graduating from high school in 1967, Mike left an indelible mark. Many will remember him as #30, All State MVP running back for the Nicolet Knights football team, while others will remember his track accomplishments of breaking state records. Some of which still hold today. From high school, Michael attended college at UW-Madison for a year before transferring to UW-LaCrosse where he graduated with a degree in education. With his degree, he taught physical education in Minnesota for a year and then returned to Wisconsin to teach in the Greenfield School system until 1984. Michael was a teacher in every sense of the word. He was not confined to teaching young adults within the walls of a classroom. He taught every child, every young person that crossed his path.

Children would surround him and scream his name and he found time to address each and every one of them with a quick smile and a wink of the eye. Michael coached them and guided them. He helped them by connecting with them and making them feel special.

Michael taught them as he taught us all, to take responsibility, to never give up, to face our fears, and to keep striving to be the best we can be because he saw the best in all of us.

Back when Michael was in LaCrosse, two major events happened in his life. He married his high school sweetheart, Gayle, and he took up the sport of motocross. He loved both with all his heart.

Gayle was his centering force; his life force and motocross gave him his entrepreneurial spirit, which sparked the idea to start a business. In 1971, while Mike was still teaching, Torque Center was established.

Michael left an indelible mark on this sport also. He raced for 30 years, was one of the top riders in the Midwest. He was a Board Member of the Aztalan Cycle Club, and The Torque Center is nationally and internationally known selling everything and anything to the extreme sports enthusiast.

In 1998 Michael was dealt the blow of being told he had Parkinson's and over time his health began to fail. Even with his debilitating disease Michael still had a quick smile and that impish grin he would give you as if he had a secret.

He lived every second with courage, and a generous spirit,. He will be forever remembered, never forgotten, and always missed. We love you Michael.

Michael is survived by his beautiful and loving wife, Gayle, his shadow Reata, mom Betty (Edward) Hable, sisters, Mary Beth Gaborsky (Buzz) Noyes, Miriam (George) Meeks, Kelli Gaborsky, niece Anna Gaborsky, nephews, Jason (Erica) Meeks, Michael John (Andi) Meeks, Christopher (Sarah) Meeks and too many loving friends to mention. His father, Godfrey, preceded him in death.

A celebration of Michael's life will be held on Friday, December 2, 2005 at the Funeral Home from 4-8 PM. A Memorial Gathering will be held Saturday, December 3 from 10-11AM with Mass of Christian Burial at 11 AM, all at ST. EUGENE'S PARISH, 7600 North Port Washington Road, Fox Point.

In memory of Michael, memorials may be made to Wisconsin Parkinson's Association Research Fund, 945 North 12th Street, Suite 4602, Milwaukee, Wisconsin 53201.

I knew Mike and Gayle thru motocross and thought the world of both of them for what they did to help the sport and help so many individuals. They helped me one time when I had trouble with my vehicle and went above and beyond what anyone else would have done.

Gayle,

I was shocked and saddened by the news of Mike's passing. He was my gym teacher at Greenfield High School when I was a freshman. I will always remember him as being the nicest person and taking me under his wing. You have my deepest smypathy, God is lucky to have him.

Dear Gayle:

You have my deepest sympathy on the passing of your husband who I fondly remember as "Coach". As a student at Edgewood Elementary School Coach Gaborsky's class was one that you couldn't wait to get to! There was always something fun going on, whether it was being put into groups of "motorcycles" and tearing around the gym or performing our original "exercise routines to music" (a precurser to "Jazzercise"?)!

At Greenfield High School, Coach was my History teacher. Once again, he made the mundane fun. He often shared his motocross tales with a slideshow to accompany it. My very favorite memory was how he started many a classtime with Johnny Horton's "The Battle of New Orleans" to which we all sang along. I can't think of that hokey song without a smile on my face!

After I became a teacher, I began to think about how nice it would be for teachers to know how much they were appreciated. After many trips past the Torque Center over the years, I decided to drop in to thank Coach for his contribution to my school experience. Unfortunately, he wasn't in. I'd like you and your family to know that after all these years, I hold special memories of Coach Gaborsky in my heart.

May you and your family find comfort knowing that Coach is enjoying an awesome life with our Lord.

Sincerely,

Jackie Johnston-Mongan

Dear Gayle: I wanted to express my deepest sympathies to you and your family. Mr. Gaborsky (or Mike as you all knew him) was my gym teacher at Edgewood in the early to mid 70's. He was such an amazing man, teacher, mentor and all around great person. I know each student he came into contact with can agree - he was one in a million and our reason for playing and staying in sports.

When I found out he had passed away, I was shocked and saddened - but then thought of all of the kids up in heaven he could teach. I then smiled. I could go on and on - but I guess most people already know. They have a favorite story about him as well. He will always be one of my very favorite teachers. I'm keeping all of you in my thoughts and my prayers.

Dearest Gayle

We consider ourselves to be so lucky to be among the people in the world who had the good fortune to know Mike. We will never forget our great times in Sedona, nor will we ever forget Mike's incredible spirit, wonderful sense of humor and his love of life and all those in it. We cannot imagine your grief and loss and we only hope that you can take some small comfort from all those who loved Mike and who love you. Bless you, sweet girl.

Mike, you were a great friend and a fun traveling companion. The four of us had so many good times in the motorhomes and the many places they took us. We are blessed forever by your friendship and for allowing us to be a part of your life. Peace be with you.

Gayle,

We want to express our deepest sympathy in your loss of Mike...your BEST friend! How blest he was to have you as his life partner! What a role model you both were/are for our Michael and Melissa as they face their daily trials.

We had the pleasure of meeting Mike several times, however, the most memorable was when you visited Michael and Melissa and we had dinner together and the ride through "Christmastown" North Carolina!

Mike had the strongest spirit and I never heard him complain about his Parkinson's. What a trouper! Our Melissa felt such a kinship to him.

We cannot imagine your sense of loss Gayle, however, please know that we are with you through our thoughts and prayers. Mike is home...with God...safe and sound for eternity.

Please keep your chin up...Mike would like that. And...always know you have a soft place to land with Michael and Melissa...they love you both so much.

Again, our deepest sympathy.

Love,

Deedee Sumner

Mike and Gayle have always been generous and kind to each person they've met. If fund raising ever needed to be done, Mike and Gayle were the first ones to pitch in for a fallen rider. For years, Mike gave teenagers something constructive to do with their time and efforts with motocross and Torque Center, keeping many of the kid out of trouble. We will always remember Mike's smile, friendliness and generosity. We were lucky to call Mike a friend and Azzie will not be the same without you! My sympathies to Gayle and the rest of the Gaborsky family.
