Irene LaFrenz Obituary

Irene Froman LaFrenz, 102, died at Hawthorne Inn in Danville, IL, on Thursday, February 9, 2006. Visitation will be at 10 a.m., and funeral service at 11 a.m., on Tuesday, February 14, in Tutt Chapel, at Second Baptist Church in Liberty, MO. Dr. Stephen Graham of Second Baptist Church will officiate. Private burial will be at New Hope Cemetery in Liberty. Irene Froman was born on March 19, 1903, in a farmhouse near Liberty, the daughter of Marshall Froman and Martha Bell Froman. She was one of the first female graduates of William Jewell College, then taught math for nearly 30 years at Liberty High School. She was married for nearly 60 years to Daniel Vern LaFrenz, graduate of and professor of math at William Jewell. They had one daughter, Martha (Robert) Kay of Danville; two granddaughters, Nancy (Don) York of Louisville, KY, and Sara Youhas of Oakwood; and six greatgrandchildren. Irene LaFrenz was a member of the Fidelis Class at Second Baptist Church in Liberty, MO. Also she belonged to the Fortnightly Club, American Association of University Women, Delta Kappa Gamma, and Daughters of the American Revolution. She loved her family, her church, her garden, good books and the TV show Jeopardy. She was famous at Second Baptist Church for her raspberry pies. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Second Baptist Church, 309 E. Franklin, Liberty, MO. (Arr. Church-Archer-Pasley, 816781-2000)

I also stumbled across this and started reading because my neighbor down the street is named Irene LaFrenz. Of course this wasn't her, but I kept reading because Mrs. LaFrenz was such a remarkable woman. My sincere admiration to this patient, caring woman. People like her make the world a more wonderful place to be.

Martha, Chuck & I attended your mother's 100th birthday party at the Nursing Home. Your mother was a great lady. We lived as neighbors to your mother and Dad in Missouri, and really enjoyed both of them. We left MO. and moved to Arizona. Enjoy going back to Liberty and out on Mary Lane. You took great care of her and your dad.

Martha,

As a teacher your mother taught math to my mother, my brother, my sister and me. I suspect she also taught many of my cousins. Hopefully she was more successful with them than she was with me. (When given the opportunity I would ask your dad for help with the homework) I always felt welcomed when I showed up as an unexpected dinner guest during our high school years. You had loving, caring parents and I thank you for sharing them with us.

Tony, I never knew your group or Ms. Irene BUT, I attended Liberty High School at Calhoun, GA where I graduated as Class Valedictorian 1949 and we had a Ms Mattie Franklin Hicks who lived to 104 and taught most of my family just as Irene did at your school. It made me realize the many coincidences we share and I had to respond with condolences and sympathy for your entire school body. I'm sure she will be sorely missed.

IT IS WITH DEPEST SYMPATHY THAT I ACKNOWLAGE THE PASSING OF YOUR PARENT. MY MOTHER WHO IS A WIDDOW, LIVES WITH ME. SHE IS ONLY 83, BUT SHE HAS A LOT OF HEALTH ISSUES AND IS IN THE HOSPITAL SOMETIMES FOR WEEKS AT A TIME. SO I THINK I KNOW HOW LOST AND LONLEY YOU CAN BE AT TIMES. I KNOW GOD WILL BE WITH YOU DURING YOUR TIME OF GREIVING.I ALSO KNOW YOU WILL BE IN MY THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS. LOUISE WAGGY A FRIEND WHO HAPPENED UPON YOUR GUEST BOOK (WHO ALSO DOSE NOT SPELL WELL).

Martha and family,

My deepest sympathy on the passing of your mother. I may well have been one of her greatest teaching challenges as I was the world's worst student of math...and try as she might...she never could make much headway through my thick skull.

My aversion to mathmatics lingers to this day, but my fond memories of Irene LaFrenz will be with me always. If ever the word "class" described an individual, it was your Mom.

Given my lack of math skills, all I can do is thank the Lord I have been able make a living just talking, which your Mother constantly reminded me not to do!

God bless.

Dear family members and friends of Mrs.Irene Lafrenz. I sure wish that we had more gentile people on this earth like Mrs.LeFrenz I did not know her but I feel my life would have been that much richer if I had.I am sadened by your loss but I believe that her spirit will be around for a very long time as it already shows in the many friends who have signed your guest book. Dear Martha:

My sincere sympathy on the death of your mother. She was always an example to me during my school days. If it hadn't been for your mother telling me to keep trying, I would never have passed her math class. She would not let me give up. I will always remember her smile, sparkling eyes, and sense of humor. She needed it for some of us that did not have a gift for math. I have thought of her often over the years and will always remember how much she helped me in math and in life. God's blessings to you and yours. Shirley Banks Harnish, Class of '54.

Actually, I don't know any of you at all; but somehow this obituary & guest book were attached to a Valentine's card for "Seniors", the card was from my sister. After reading your Mom's obituary and the entries in her guest book, I too wanted to offer my condolences. I lost my Mom October '04 and miss her terribly every day so I can relate to your sorrows more than I could've before that loss. My Mom left us at tthe age of 82 and none of us were even close to ready for her to go; especially my Dad who joined her 4 months later. After 52 years together, I suspect that's what he wanted. It's so hard but we keep on going, as will you. It sounds like your Mom was as loved as mine was!

Blessings from the Lord on all the relatives of this dear lady. To be ushered into the presence of Jesus is only joy to the receiver and seeming saddness to those left behind. She will remain in our hearts and minds for as long as we need, or even think about math or what it means to be a great teacher. Last week I was substituting as a math teacher. Her memory was there every time I helped a student solve an equation. I was never trained to be a math teacher, but I can still solve a quadratic equation and explain it to a student. She was one of the finest teachers and human beings I've have ever had the opportunity to know. What an honor it is to have been one of her students.

Martha,

I will always remember you and your parents. It was a great coincidence one of you mother's first students, Frank Rohrs, Sr. would 40 years later be your neighbor on the same steet, and would have his son Frank Rohrs Jr. as a student as well. Your mother always encouraged me to continue in my schooling and found it rewarding that I had gone from a farm helper for husband to a science teacher. She was always interested in how my family was doing and watched me build a house on La Frenz Rd. just down the street from her home.
