Gene Costin Obituary

COSTIN, Gene Born in Louisville, KY November 25, 1927. Gene Costin moved with his parents at the age of 12 to Los Angeles and loved this community. He lived a full and accomplished life. As a young man Gene devolped interests in politics and astronomy and closely followed developments in both areas throughout his life. He was a passionate civil libertarian and supporter of many liberal causes and other charities. He was well known in the two-way radio communications business and renowned to radio hobbyists nationwide for Police Call, which he published under the name Gene C. Hughes. After retirement he served long hours as a volunteer at the LAPD, for which he received a Volunteer of the Year award from the State of California. He was loved and will be missed by a wonderful family- his devoted wife Mitzi, three children, and their spouses-Cathy Costin (Mitchell Reback), Robert Costin (Yves Yarborox), and John Costin (Rachel Phipps). He was proud of his four grandchildren, Isaac Reback, Mia Reback, Silas Phipps-Costin, and Judah Phipps-Costin, and he adored his dog Murray. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Tower Cancer Research Foundation or a charity of your choice. Services will be private at Gene's request.

It was with extreme sadness that I learned of the passing of Gene. Having only met him once in person, but over the years, via letter, and email, Gene provided a wealth of information and help during my tenure as Editor of the PS-CA column of RCMA, and afterwards. Reading the words of others, I can't add much more to the tribute to this man. Thank you, Sir, for all those many wonderful memories and "debates" of who's info was right, and who's info was wrong. I'm gonna place a black band over my portable scanner tonite. Each of us in amateur radio and/or scanner owes a geat debt to a great man.

Gene and I met by phone and letter over twenty years ago. Then a few years later we got to meet in person, once in Knoxville, Tennessee and again in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. On both occassions we met at radio shows. Shortly after we began publishing National Scanning Magazine (Now National Communications), Gene took the time to write various articles for us. I always found Gene to be a gentleman with the highest qualities. Some place I have a picture of Gene holding a copy of the Betty Bearcat frequency directory which I authored and I was standing by him holding a copy of the Police Call directory. I need to locate that picture again. 73 Gene.

I remember looking forward to each issue of POLICE CALL - not only for the freq. information but for the editors page were Gene let all the scanner buffs know what was going on in the public safety area. I also recall getting an e-mail response from Gene after I wrote him to thank him for all the past issues of POLICE CALL. Gene made scanning more than just a hobby. We will miss you Gene.

Mitzi...
Let me first say, it was an privilege and honor to serve your husband Gene, during his visits to Tower Oncology. I am sorry that I did not have the opportunity to spend more time with him reminiscing about LAPD Wilshire and general law enforcement stuff as he and I were so enthusiastic about. I will always remember him calling me a "hero" but he was truly the hero; volunteering his time and efforts for his worthy causes...I only with there was more I could do for a man who gave so much to others. My condolences and prayers to you and your family.

Gene's words of encouragement transcend even the outstanding Police Call series. As times in the radio publishing world got less professional and trying, he was there for me personally with an actual mailed letter. Thank you, Gene for being there.

There is no doubt in my mind that Gene is largely responsible for my life-long love of radio scanning. As a teenager in 1970's, I devoured each annual issue of the SoCal Edition of Police Call. Also, I recall that Gene always answered and responded to each letter personally; a treat that seems to have largely disappeared nowadays.

In later years, I enjoyed having dinner with him at the monthly SoCal Monitoring Association meetings in West L.A. and chatting about everything from RF spectrum management to civil liberties.

I will miss him greatly.

I'll always remember Gene most of all for his many personal kindnesses to me, and his unfailing willingness to help or offer a gentle correction whenever asked. But that WAS Gene: a gentleman and a gentle man.

Thank you, Gene, for being the spark and inspiration leading to my career in public safety communications, and 40 years later, for keeping me up-to-date on it after my retirement.

And thanks, too, for treating Melanie and me to that delightful lunch and the tour of Wilshire Division.

In the mid-70's radio monitoring was a great hobby for a 13-year old with numerous health problmes, it was a good clean hobby and Gene's work insipred me to find out as much as I could about the hobby and Police Call put me in touch with many people within the hobby, some of those friendships have lasted over 30 years. About 12 years ago, as a young columnist with Scanning USA, I was given the opportunity to interview Gene and it was such a thrill listening to his life's story. Gene, thank you and God Bless you.

I was so sorry to hear of Gene's passing. Like so many thousands of people who enjoyed scanning, I owe a huge debt of gratitude to Gene for all of his pioneering work that allowed us this pleasure. Altho' we never met in person I shared many correspondences with him over the years. He will always be in my memory.

Zichrom l'vracha - may the memory of Gene Costin abide for a blessing for all eternity.

I once met Gene when he offered me to take over Police Call some years ago. I felt I could never follow his excellent footsteps in that venture so I declined his offer.
He will be remembered by literally thousands.
