Carolyn Crain Obituary

CRAIN, Carolyn Long-time City Librarian in San Marino, passed away peacefully at her home in Arcadia on May 8, 2008, after a heroic 20-year battle with breast cancer. She will be missed by her husband, Alan Pierpoint; her daughter, Branwyn Pierpoint; her mother, Mary Crain; sisters, Marlene Cristal and Colleen Crain and their husbands, Ed and Jim; brothers, William Crain and Robert Crain and wife, Lilu; nieces, Jennifer, Renee, Holly, and April; a large extended family and many life-long friends. Born on May 4, 1950, Carolyn graduated from Granada Hills HS in 1968. She earned her BA in history from CSUN and her MA in Library Science from the University of Denver. There followed a 34-year career in library service. Carolyn's dedication, hard work, and management skills earned her many promotions. The highlight of her career was her involvement in the planning, construction, and dedication of a new public library in San Marino. She devoted the last two years of her professional life to this project, and when the new library opened to the public on January 26, 2008, she left the hospital against medical advice to speak at the grand opening ceremony, receiving three standing ovations from an appreciative community. Carolyn had many interests. She and Alan rode regularly with the Foothill Cycle Club and took many bicycle vacations to Europe, Canada, and the western United States. She enjoyed a wide range of music, from Celtic folk to classic rock; she and Alan were regulars at the Pasadena Symphony. They also found time to visit museums and art galleries during weekends and vacations. Carolyn served as president of the YWCA in Redlands and was active in the Rotary club in San Marino. Nearly every week during her tenure as City Librarian, Carolyn attended evening meetings of the City Council, Board of Trustees, and other support groups to advocate the interests of the library and of the profession to which she gave so much. Of course she loved to read, especially non-fiction, biography, history and science. She and a few reader friends recently formed the "No Stress Book Group" to broaden their reading horizons. Carolyn maintained many long-term friendships with women she had met at every stage of her life. Her daughter was a special star, bringing beauty, joy, ideas, and an ironic sense of humor into Carolyn's life and providing loving, hands-on care at the end. A Celebration of Life service will take place on Sunday May 18, 2008 at 11 a.m., at the San Marino Public Library. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to National Museum for Women in the Arts, National Parks Conservation Association and L.A. Times Summer Camp Fund.

Carolyn became a wonderful friend to me in 8th grade, and that friendship and its memories remain even today, in my 70´s.
That friendship included a group of seven or eight of us that still remains.
Growing up in the San Fernando Valley was an incredible experience, one that included almost weekly Saturday trips to the beach, trips to downtown Hollywood to see classic movies (a favorite memory of mine is sitting on the aisle in a Hollywood theater, watching a special screening of the classic "Gone With the Wind" with my seven dear friends, the lights coming on at intermission, and looking down the row of us, everyone of my friends wiping their eyeglasses dry of their tears.
I can hear her unique laugh, which always started out explosively, see her love of Scottish Terriers, and feel the strength of her loyalty to th circle of friends that never altered from 7t grade on to the end of her life.
I know we will see her again. GLH

Carolyn was a warm, loving, thoughtful and resilient woman, and man was she funny. I always picture her beautiful eyes smiling and her laugh. Thank you to all who attended her service and who have signed this guest book. It means a great deal to our family to know how Carolyn is remembered in the thoughts of so many.

It has been a great pleasure for me to know Carolyn. I have always been amazed and admired her courage in her fight. She was an inspiration for me when I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer. She will always have a special place in my heart.

The Palmer Family will miss their long time friend. Carolyn showed immense courage in fighting her loosing battle with breast cancer and somehow managed to maintain her sunny disposition and sense of humor.

It has been a great pleasure knowing and working with Carolyn over the past years. As a neighboring Library Director, I know how thoroughly dedicated she was to San Marino Library programs and services. A truly gracious woman, I feel privileged to have known her.

I want to share a quote from Marge Piercy. "What a richly colored strong warm coat is woven when love is the warp and work is the woof."

Carolyn was a great Reference Librarian for the City of Monrovia. It was a pleasure having her on my staff. Her dedication was a joy to see and be a part of. She will be missed, but the Library she built can serve well as a memorial to her work.

I never had the honor of meeting Carolyn - but anyone who loves books is a friend of mine.

May you be at peace and what countless lives you will have touched by your hard work on the new library.

I will keep the family in my prayers.
