Margaret Meredith Obituary
Meredith, Margaret Muse,
Actress, died on March 6, 2006 after a career of more than 60 years in film, television, and theatre. Margaret began her career while still in her teens, first in her native Dallas, and then, on to regional repertory theatres on both coasts and in-between. Along the way, she appeared with Martha Graham in her dance-drama "Letter to the World" in the speaking-dancing character of Emily Dickson. In Los Angeles, she added TV and film roles to her dossier. Margaret was born in Dallas, Texas on January 6, 1915, the daughter of James Clarence Muse and Annie McCormick Muse. Her early interest in theatre brought her to the Dallas Little Theatre School, where she met Charles Meredith, Broadway actor and Little Theatre director. They were married on Thanksgiving, 1932. The Merediths performed in this genre under Charles Meredith's direction, at the Dock Street Theater in Charleston, S.C. and the Vieux Carre Theater in New Orleans. They came to California in the late 40's, where Margaret worked in television, film, and theatre. Outstanding among many television appearances were those in "Knott's Landing" and "General Hospital", the last on which she worked two years. She also appeared on NBC and CBS, in Movies of the Week. Margaret's main love was theatre. Her many performances in local companies included Mrs. Warren in "Mrs. Warren's Profession", Queen Margaret in "Richard III", and Orthinia in "The Apple Cart". She was known for versatility and clear characterization and was specially trained by her husband in Ibsen and Shaw roles. She performed many parts during her career, and toured colleges and women's clubs with one-woman shows. Margaret is survived by her son Douglas and his wife Reva, their two sons David and Casey from New Zealand; her sister Florence Ahearn and husband Vincent of Dallas, Texas with children and grandchildren; stepdaughter Diane Voltz of Ventura, California, with her children Tina, of Peekskill, NY, and Andrew of Santa Monica, California; also, stepson Charles Melsing Meredith of Burbank, with daughters Linda and Karin, and numerous grandchildren. A memorial program will be held Thursday, March 9th at 3 p.m. at Theatre West, 3333 Cahuenga Blvd, Studio City, CA.
