He was a wonderful physics teacher at NAU; when I was there they saddled him with some difficult class sections (lots of athletes) . Two years before it happened he predicted something like the Challenger disaster in front of a large classroom. Some of the folks snickered when he said 'they don't know what they are messing with'. I was struggling with a heavy workload in and out of school and his compassion and intellect were much appreciated; his lectures stuck with me. He was very generous with his time to all that were really interested.

I feel truly fortunate to have been close to Wirt and Virginia in Flagstaff. Wirt was my freshman physics professor and I became his hiking companion in the Grand Canyon for many of the laser experiments. Wirt was always an inspiration, having overcome such obstacles while always beaming with optimism and enthusiasm. He and Virginia were always eager to talk about literature, music, science, etc. I last visited Wirt and Virginia not long before Virginia passed - my young daughter and I saw them in Sun City where they remained full of energy with multiple projects underway. Thank you for the lovely obituary - we shall all miss them.

I offer my condolences to Dr. Ward's family. I met him in l971 when my Washington U. classmate Joyce Dickerman invited me to drive with her, her mother and Dr. Ward from St. Louis to their home in Flagstaff. After 42 years, I recently returned to Flagstaff and, of course, thought of Joyce and her family. A Google search sadly revealed that Dr. Ward had passed away the month before. I read his life story with great interest and admiration. I remember his quiet humility, hospitality and generosity. It was a wonderful trip and the entire family treated me like a very special friend.
