steve and family, your in our thoughts and prayers , may god bless you with his strength to get through the rough days ahead.

Dear steve and family im so sorry for your loss, may god give you all the strength you need to get through this very difficult time. Prayers and thoughts coming your way, God bless!

Through all the years of knowing Kitty, I have to say she was a wonderful caring person who would do anything for anyone and then some. I remember all the good times we all had while all her grandkids were growing up including mine and Steve's daughters Mindy, Jennifer, Donya and even my daughter Lindsey that she often called Coleen. We had several get togethers that Kitty and Lawrence both made special so our memories would last a lifetime. She was very much loved and will truly be missed!

I will miss my wonderful and caring grandmother, who would've done anything in her power and capability to help others including all the strays of Ashmore. There was not an animal on the South side of Ashmore that went hungry. I know I aided in this with a Saturday trip to Charleston for dog food, cat food, cracked corn, squirrel corn and/or bird seed. She will be truely missed and I guess I will have to get a hobby to take up my Saturdays!! I want to thank everyone in advance and to all...

We are going to miss Kitty dearly. My cats would go back to see her daily and are still going back there looking for her. The deer, raccoons, geese, mama fox and neighbors will definitely feel her absence.
My thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time. God Bless you!

Rest in Peace "Kitty". You was always a good neighbor. Your furry friends and others will miss you.

Helen's Obituary

ASHMORE, IL – Helen W. "Kitty" Hughes, age 72 of Ashmore, Illinois, passed away on Saturday, February 4, 2012 at her niece's home in Olney.  Visitation for family and friends will be held Wednesday (February 8) from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at Adams Funeral Chapel in Charleston.  Services honoring and celebrating her life will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday at the funeral chapel with Reverend Bill Boaz officiating.  Interment will follow in the Ashmore Cemetery, Ashmore, Illinois.   It is requested that memorial gifts in her honor be made to the family in care of her son, Steve Tewell.  Gifts may be left on the memorial table at the visitation or service, or mailed to Adams Funeral Chapel, 2330 Shawnee Drive, Charleston, IL 61920.

Kitty, as she was affectionately known, was born on January 19, 1940 in Bridgeport, Illinois, a daughter of the late Everett W. and Minnie M. (Doss) Wells.  Her first marriage was to Delmar Tewell.  She later married Robert Plummer in 1961 and on August 10, 1974 married Lawrence Hughes who preceded her in death on June 1, 2000.  She is survived by her loving family; a son, Steve Tewell of Charleston; three granddaughters, Melinda (Mindy) Johns and husband Jarrod of Ashmore, Donya Fulk and husband Donald of Charleston, Jennifer Brown and husband Kaleb of Panama City Beach, Florida; four great-grandchildren, Jocelyn Fulk, Donald Fulk, Jr., Nathan Johns and Marisa Johns; five step-children, Clinton Hughes and wife Beth of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Floyd Hughes of Kansas, Illinois, Laura Brewer and husband Terry of Charleston, Arthur Hughes of Martinsville, Illinois, Richard Hughes of Lake Jackson, Texas; two sisters, Madaline Tucker of Flat Rock, Illinois, Kathaleen Harmon and special friend Cletus Oaks of Olney, Illinois; a brother, Sam Wells and wife Carol of DuQuoin, Illinois; and numerous step-grandchildren, nieces and nephews and their families.  Kitty was also preceded in death by an infant son, James Robert Tewell and a step-granddaughter, Sherilynn Cox.

Kitty was previously employed by a local janitorial service but her primary focus in life was creating for her a family a home that was comfortable and full of love.   She enjoyed family reunions and holiday celebrations as they allowed her to spend time with her family - especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, whom she dearly loved.  For her family, these get-togethers meant that Kitty was sure to bake her delicious pies that were always in demand.  She had a tender heart for animals (of all kinds) and tried to make sure that none were neglected.  Kitty will always be remembered for her kindness and generosity.  Click here to view Family Memorial Video.
