Ella's Obituary

CHARLESTON, IL – Ella Mae Waggle, age 87 of Charleston, entered her heavenly home on Saturday, February 11, 2012 at Hilltop Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation in Charleston where she was a resident.  Visitation for family and friends will be held Thursday, February 16, 2012 from Noon until 2:00 p.m. at Adams Funeral Chapel in Charleston.  Services honoring and celebrating her life will begin at 2:00 p.m. immediately following visitation on Thursday with Pastor Curt Weaver officiating.  Interment will follow in Janesville Cemetery, rural Janesville, Illinois.   It is requested that in lieu of flowers memorial gifts in her honor be made to East Harrison Street Church of God in Charleston.  Gifts may be left on the memorial table at the visitation or service, or mailed to Adams Funeral Chapel, 2330 Shawnee Drive, Charleston, IL 61920. 

Ella was born April 4, 1924 in Coles County, Illinois, one of twelve children born to the late William and Elsie (Drummond) Howard.  She married John Lawyer in 1941 and they had five children.  She later married Harry Waggle on March 18, 1994 and they have shared nearly eighteen years of loving friendship and marriage.  Ella is survived by her husband Harry of Charleston; four loving and devoted children – her daughter, Brenda Burwell and husband Harold of Mattoon and three sons, Ronald Lawyer and wife Ellen "Jo" of Columbus, Mississippi, John Lawyer and wife Cherie of Mesa, Arizona and Perry Lawyer and wife Jeanie of Windsor, Illinois; four stepchildren, Patricia "Patty" Keck and husband Dave of Trowbridge, Illinois, Cindy Apple and husband Travis of Arizona, Paula Snider and husband Kevin of Lerna, Illinois, Ed Waggle and wife Martha of Mattoon; nine grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; twelve step-grandchildren; sixteen step-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Isabel Stone and husband Don of Ridge Mound, Florida and Anne Lilley of Charleston; and a large extended family. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by a son, Steven Lawyer; a granddaughter, Bambi Lawyer; six brothers, Earl Howard, Bill Howard, Harry Howard, Charles Howard, Lawrence Howard and Robert Howard; and three sisters, Lois Croy, Rose Matheny and Margaret Rennels.

 Ella was a thirteen year employee of General Electric in Mattoon.  In 1966 she established her own business - Lawyer's Beauty Shop in Mattoon where she worked as a hairdresser for seventeen years and was a member of the area Hairdresser's Association.  Ella was faithful in her Christian witness – she was a Charter Member of Broadway Christian Church in Mattoon and a member there for more than fifty years.  She was currently a member and attended East Harrison Street Church of God in Charleston.  

Ella was a gifted poet and writer and a member and supporter of the National American League of Pen Women.  She authored quite a collection of poems and children's stories. She also enjoyed hobbies such as country western dancing, fishing and camping.  Ella was a devoted wife to Harry and a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.  She leaves an abundance of fond memories - and when recalled will offer comfort to those who knew and loved her.Click here to view Ella's memorial tribute video.
