CHARLESTON, IL – Brenda Briggerman, age 72 of Charleston, passed away on Wednesday, September 5, 2012 at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center. Visitation for family and friends will be held on Tuesday, September 11, 2012 from 1:00 – 2:30 p.m. at Adams Funeral Chapel in Charleston. Services honoring and celebrating her life will begin immediately following the visitation at 2:30 p.m. with Reverend Ralph Sikes officiating. Interment will follow in Humboldt Cemetery located west of Humboldt, Illinois. It is requested that memorial gifts in her honor be made to the National Parkinson Foundation (www.parkinson.org). Gifts may be left on the memorial table at the visitation or service, or mailed to Adams Funeral Chapel, 2330 Shawnee Drive, Charleston, IL 61920.
Brenda was born on August 28, 1940 in Nashville, Tennessee and was the daughter of Walter and Helon "Peggy" (Haynes) Adams. She married Lawrence D. Briggerman on September 8, 1962. Her surviving family members include her husband Lawrence of Charleston; two children, Robert A. Briggerman and his partner Nate Haro of Signal Hill, California and Amy L. Briggerman of Charleston; a granddaughter, Kailey M. Winkler of Charleston; a brother, Donald R. Starwalt and his partner Richard Cavanaugh of Charleston; her mother-in-law, Lucille Briggerman of Charleston; two brothers-in-law, Herman Briggerman and wife Mary of rural Charleston and Howard Briggerman and wife Carol of Mattoon. In addition to her parents, Brenda was preceded in death by her a step-parents, Willard and Ellen Starwalt.
Brenda was a 1958 graduate of Mattoon High School and attended Utterback's Business College. She was employed with the Coles County Treasurer's Office, the First National Bank in Mattoon and later at the Charleston National Bank. She was affiliated with East Harrison Street Church of God and Wesley United Methodist Church in Charleston and was a member of the American Women's Bowling Association and the Coles County Farm Bureau.
Brenda was always active and on the go – she and Lawrence enjoyed camping and antiquing together. She also enjoyed golfing, playing softball and was an avid and talented bowler. Throughout the years Brenda claimed several bowling championships. Brenda was also an avid Chicago Cubs fan which led to much bantering between her and brother Don, an avid St. Louis Cardinal fan.
Brenda was afflicted with Parkinson's Disease at a young age but she never lost her sense of humor or her love for people. She will be affectionately remembered by everyone who knew and loved her.
