Not sure what to say?

Just heard from Gracie Jones of Nelda's passing, and Mother and I wanted to send our deepest condolences. I still have the brown bird she gave me for getting tickets to see Kenny Rogers on the mantle. A reminder of fun times....May God Bless. Sincerely, Mary Thompson Little and Pearl Thompson.

So sorry to read of Aunt Nelda's passing. We are in Buckeye, AZ now and will be heading to Harlingen, TX in the next couple weeks. Just wanted you all to know that you are all in our thoughts and our prayers.

CHARLESTON, IL – Nelda L. Hudson, age 91 of Charleston, went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Sunday, January 6, 2013 while at the Odd Fellow-Rebekah Home in Mattoon.  Visitation for family and friends will be held Friday, January 11, 2013 from noon until 1:00 p.m. at Adams Funeral Chapel in Charleston.  Services honoring and celebrating her life will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Friday at the funeral chapel with Pastor Rex Shaw officiating.  Interment will follow in Roselawn Cemetery in Charleston.   It is requested that memorial gifts in her honor be made to the Whetstone Baptist Church or to a charity of the donor's preference.  Gifts may be left on the memorial table at the visitation or service, or mailed to Adams Funeral Chapel, 2330 Shawnee Drive, Charleston, IL 61920.

Nelda was born on September 24, 1921 in Charleston and was a daughter of the late Charles and Naomi (Todd) Briggs.  She married Kenneth E. Hudson on November 19, 1938 and they enjoyed sixty-six years of friendship and marriage prior to his death on March 24, 2005.  She is survived by two sons, Ed Hudson and wife Nancy of Charleston and Joe Hudson of Phoenix, Arizona; a daughter-in-law, Marsha Hudson of Mattoon; a son-in-law, Robert Lawhorn of Charleston; thirteen grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.  In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Steve Hudson; a daughter, Katherine "Kack" Lawhorn; a granddaughter; four sisters and three brothers.

Nelda worked in the cafeteria at Charleston High School and at Reasor's Paint Store before accepting a position with the Building Services Department of Eastern Illinois University, where she was employed for ten years prior to her retirement.  She was a woman of faith and was a devoted member of Whetstone Baptist Church for more than fifty years and was a song leader for many of those years.  She was a life member of the Order of Eastern Star and was Past Worthy Matron of the Lerna Chapter.

Nelda was an avid reader and encouraged those around her to read as well.  She was known to tell her family members to "read everything you can get your hands on".  She was blessed with good friends and a family who loved her dearly – she never had far to look to find someone to share an afternoon cup of coffee.  Nelda cherished her family and was happiest when she was with them.  She will be greatly missed but so fondly remembered by all who knew her.Click here to view Nelda's memorial video.
