CHARLESTON, IL – Scott Joseph Sly, age 52 of Charleston, passed away on Monday, January 14, 2013 in the comfort of his home.  Visitation for family and friends will be held Thursday evening, January 17, 2013 from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. at Adams Funeral Chapel in Charleston.  Services honoring and celebrating his life will begin at 6:00 p.m. Thursday evening immediately following the visitation with Pastor Mike Southards officiating.  In accordance with Scott's wishes his earthly body will be cremated following the services.  It is requested that memorial gifts in his honor be made to his wife, Penny Sly, to assist with final expenses.  Gifts may be left on the memorial table at the visitation or service, or mailed to Adams Funeral Chapel, 2330 Shawnee Drive, Charleston, IL 61920.

Scott was born on January 6, 1961 in Charleston and was a son of Robert and Marjorie (Trower) Sly.  He married Penny Wheeler on October 28, 1983 at the East Harrison Street Church of God in Charleston and they have shared twenty-nine years of marriage and friendship.  In addition to Penny, Scott is survived by two children, a son, Joey Sly of Charleston and a daughter, Hannah Banyai and husband Kenton of Normal, Illinois; his mother and stepfather, Jerry and Marjorie Cezik of Mattoon; his stepmother, Joyce Sly of Charleston; a brother, Charlie Bob Sly and wife Sue of Charleston; two sisters, Chris Clapp and husband Jack of Oakland, Illinois and Toni Elliott and husband Rob of North Carolina; and several nieces and nephews.  Scott was preceded in death by his father and his great aunt Lucille "Cille" Alexander.

Scott was a 1979 graduate of Charleston High School and was employed at Blaw-Knox and Vesuvius before taking a job with Hi-Cone, a position he has held for the past seven years.  He was also a member of First Christian Church in Charleston.

Scott was a "kid at heart" and fun to be around!  He enjoyed having a good time and made sure that others did as well with his light-hearted sense of humor - he loved making others laugh.  He enjoyed a ride on his motorcycle, sitting on the riverbank fishing and especially camping.  If there was a campfire you were sure to find Scott – sharing good times with family and friends.  He was always willing to help which created a faithful and loyal friend for many.  Scott possessed a kind and gentle soul and was a loving and devoted husband, father, son and brother.  He was loved and respected by those who knew him and they will forever treasure their many fond memories.Click here to view Scott's memorial video.
