Sarah's Obituary

CHARLESTON, IL – Sarah Antha Brewer, age 88 of Charleston, passed away on Monday, January 28, 2013 at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center.  Services honoring and celebrating her life will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, February 1, 2013 at Adams Funeral Chapel with Pastor Tom Skinner officiating.  Interment will follow in Roselawn Cemetery, Charleston.  Visitation for family and friends will be held Friday from 11:00 a.m. until service time.  The family has requested casual attire for those attending the visitation and service.  It is requested that memorial gifts in her honor be made to the American Parkinson Disease Association or to the Coles County Animal Shelter.  Gifts may be left on the memorial table at the visitation or service, or mailed to Adams Funeral Chapel, 2330 Shawnee Drive, Charleston, IL 61920.

Antha was born on March 28, 1924 in Coles County, Illinois and was a daughter of the late Silas Marion and Mary Ann "Millie" (Stevens) Hargis.  She married Wayne Brewer on October 5, 1946 and they shared forty-eight years of friendship and marriage prior to his death on May 15, 1995.  She is survived by her two loving and devoted sons, Silas Mitchell Brewer and wife Debbie of Charleston and John Wayne Brewer and wife Carol of Findlay, Illinois; seven grandchildren, Paul Brewer and wife Debbie of Ashmore, Tamela Hugg and husband Mike of Brocton, John W. Brewer of Charleston, Mary Antha Trader and husband Rick of Mattoon, Geneva-Renee Wooford of Kirkwood, Louisiana, Jaymie Mitchell of Charleston and Kathleen Brewer of Mattoon; 14 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild; a sister, F. Ileene Ealy of Sierra Vista, Arizona; a brother, Paul G. Hargis and wife Gloria of Toledo, Illinois; and several nieces and nephews and their families.  In addition to her parents and her husband, Antha was preceded in death by three brothers, Wilford, Victor and Jack Hargis.

Antha was employed at the Charleston Brown Shoe Company and later took a job with Lee's Nursery and Greenhouse south of Charleston.  She was also employed in the finishing department at Unibuilt.  She attended East Harrison Street Church of God and the Bushton Christian Church during the years she lived in Bushton.

Antha was gifted with an artistic ability.  She loved to draw and enjoyed crocheting – many of her hand stitched hats went to benefit those who were undergoing cancer treatments.  She was quite the "rockhound" and made beautiful jewelry from the rocks she found, ground and polished.  Her green thumb yielded bountiful vegetable gardens and beautiful flower gardens and she enjoyed going to the woods in search of mushrooms and ginseng.  She also loved animals and had a way of nursing back to health those that were injured.  From an early age, Antha was a hard worker and helped care for her brothers and sister.  She tenderly cared for her own family with love and devotion and was always there for them when needed.  She has provided for her children and grandchildren a wonderful legacy of many fond memories of those special times shared.Click here to view Antha's memorial video.
