CHARLESTON, IL – Harold P. Humbert, age 89 of Charleston, joined his wife in their Heavenly Home on Wednesday, March 20, 2013 while a patient at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center. Visitation for family and friends will be held Friday, March 29, 2013 from Noon until 1:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church, 2800 University Drive in Charleston. Services honoring and celebrating his life will begin at 1:30 on Friday in the Chapel at Roselawn Cemetery with Reverend Adrian Lamkin officiating. It is requested that memorial gifts in his honor be made to the First Baptist Church. Gifts may be left on the memorial table at the visitation or mailed to Adams Funeral Chapel, 2330 Shawnee Drive, Charleston, IL 61920.
Harold was born on April 13, 1923 in Lake Lynn, Pennsylvania and was a son of the late Hugh and Viola (Sisler) Humbert, Sr. He married Geraldine Lindhardt on August 20, 1948 and they were blessed with 64 years of marriage and friendship prior to her death on March 4, 2013. He is survived by their children, Philip E. Humbert and wife Mary of Eugene, Oregon, Faith Waite and husband Gregory of Rockford, Illinois, Vernon J. Humbert and wife Laraine of Jacksonville, Florida and Joy Scott and husband Mike of Charleston; 11 grandchildren, Sara Titus and husband Matt, Sheldon Waite and wife Juliet, Hannah Florez and husband Andres, David Waite, Elise Wible and husband Jerry, Amanda Humbert, Michelle Humbert, Sean Kelly and wife Heather, Erin Bedolla and husband Raul, Jennifer Kelly and Shannon Bulla and husband Andrew; nine great-grandchildren and two more on the way, Izabela, Samuel, Lucie and Evangeline Titus, Isaiah and Ezra Waite, Eland Lawson, Sofia Florez and Natalia Bedolla; and a brother, Hugh Humbert and wife Frances of Pennsylvania. In addition to his parents and his wife he was preceded in death by a great-granddaughter, Gwen Lawson.
Harold honorably served his country with the U.S. Navy during World War II. Reverend Humbert received his Bachelors Degree from Wheaton College, his Masters of Divinity from Eastern Baptist Seminary in Philadelphia and also completed a year of Clinical Pastoral Education Training in Elgin. He was ordained by the American Baptist Churches, served as pastor of the Juda Baptist Church in Juda, Wisconsin and the First Baptist Church in Appleton, Wisconsin and retired in 1987 following a twenty year ministry as Chaplain with the Elgin Mental Health Center. Since moving to Charleston he has been a member of First Baptist Church where he continued to teach adult Sunday School and Bible Study. He also actively participated in various Bible Study groups in the Charleston area. Reverend Humbert also served as a Chaplain at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center which allowed him to visit with people, a ministry he so enjoyed and was dedicated to. Reverend Humbert was also a member of the Illinois State Chaplain Association as well as the Navigators.
Harold always enjoyed tinkering around home and a new and helpful invention would often appear. He also enjoyed camping and traveling with Gerry and even built their own camping trailer. Harold also spent a great deal of time in theological study and enjoyed writing on such topics. His devoted and steadfast love for his family was exemplary and his devotion to Christian Ministry and serving others came from the heart. Reverend Humbert faithfully served the Lord through his Christian witness and selfless service to others.
