Not sure what to say?

There are certain people who quietly come into your life and make a great and lasting impact. Dorothy Goble was one such person for my family and me. I well remember the Sunday school and Bible School classes Dorothy taught so patiently to many of us. She and Hubert were lasting impressions as I grew up in the Presbyterian Church and later when our family came back to the Ashmore area to live. By then, our oldest children would know the benefit of caring people like Dorothy---especially...

Aunt Dorothy and Uncle Hubert were such a wonderful example of how people should be. Our trips to see them and attend the family pick nicks were always the high point of my summer (especially Aunt Dorothy's cooking and her famous jelly and jam) I called her and spoke to her earlier in this year and I had hoped to visit her, but it was not to be. She will always have a very special place in my heart with Uncle Hubert.

Dorothy and Hubert were such a gift in my life growing up in Ashmore. I will always remember the times at choir practice or Eastern Star and the sense of humor they had. Even after I moved to St. Louis Dorothy would call me once in a while. May the memories you have of them comfort you at this difficult time. I shall miss her terribly.

Dorothy and Hubert were like an aunt and uncle to me, as they and my parents were such good friends. I always tried to see them when back in Charleston. My thoughts are with all the nieces and nephews during this time. They were so proud of all of you.

Although we can't be with you while you remember your loved one, you're in our thoughts from afar. May thoughts and prayers comfort you today and throughout the year to come.

Dorothy was born in Hutton Township in Coles County, Illinois on November 7, 1918 and was a daughter of the late Earl and Elsie (Wilson) Johns.  She and Hubert Goble were married in Charleston on August 22, 1936 by Reverend H.L. Hayes and lovingly shared nearly seventy-three years of marriage and friendship prior to his death on August 1, 2009.  She is survived by several nieces and nephews and their families which include Jack Davis of Charleston, Evelyn (Davis) Wayne of Sullivan, Mary Low Carrier of St. Petersburg, FL, Thomas (Bonnie) Ruggles of Belair, Florida, Robert (Diana) Johns of Marshalltown, IA and Evelyn "Bitsy" Mourning of Newburgh, IN.  In addition to her parents and husband, Dorothy was preceded in death by two brothers, Donald and Robert Johns; a sister, Helen Davis; and a nephew, Robert Goble.

For many years Dorothy worked alongside Hubert on their grain and livestock farm in the Ashmore and Westfield area.  They also held part ownership of the Phipps and Goble John Deere implement business.  Following the sale of the business they continued farming and raising livestock with the help of Rex Richey, who was a dear and special friend.   Dorothy also worked in the school cafeteria at the Ashmore Elementary School.   She was a life-long member of the Ashmore United Presbyterian Church where she sang in the church choir, taught children's classes and served on many church committees.  She was a member and star point of the Order of Eastern Star Ashmore Chapter #670 for more than fifty years.  Dorothy lived in Ashmore from 1947 until 2008 and was an active and dedicated member of the Ashmore community.  In honor of her service, she along with Hubert, were elected to serve as Grand Marshals of the Ashmore Days festivities in 1989.

Dorothy was a loving Christian woman and her love for God was reflected in her lifestyle.  She was always available to extend caring help to family and friends and there are many who can still recall special childhood memories of times spent at Dorothy and Hubert's home.  She loved poetry, craft projects and cooking – her homemade hot rolls were a favorite.  She was always devoted to making her house a home and enjoyed decorating – especially for holidays and special occasions.  Dorothy will continue to be remembered by her family and friends for her kindness and love for others.
