Fernandina Mesquita, 89, of Wallingford, loving wife of 58 years to Henrique Mesquita, passed away peacefully June 2, 2016 at her home surrounded by her family.She was born in Soutelinho Do Mezio, Portugal on November 11, 1926, a daughter of the late Manuel and Josefina Sousa Gomes. She immigrated to the United States 35 years ago and worked as a seamstress for many years at Feldman Dress Shop until her retirement in 1991. Her family was most important to her and she was commonly seen walking hand-in-hand with her husband Henrique. She was a devoted communicant of Most Holy Trinity Church in Wallingford, enjoyed knitting, and was very much the matriarch of the family.In addition to her husband, she is survived by her children, Manuel Mesquita and his wife Maria, Maria Chaves and her husband Albertino, Fernando Mesquita and his wife Dina, and Jorge Mesquita and his wife Bonnie, all of Wallingford; her brothers, Domingos Gomes and his wife Prazeres of York, ME, and Agostinho Gomes and his wife Rosa of Portugal; her sister, Maria Gomes of Portugal; six grandchildren, Sonia, Brian Sofia, Sandra, Carlos, and Isabel; two great-grandchildren, Jose and Jeni; and many nieces and nephews.Her family will receive relatives and friends in The Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 North Main St. Ext., on Monday, June 6, 2016 from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, June 7th, from The Wallingford Funeral Home at 9 a.m., when the funeral cortege will proceed to Most Holy Trinity Church, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Interment will be in Center Street Cemetery in Wallingford. www.wallingfordfh.com
