John F. Umek

John F. Umek, 94 of Panama passed away at 6:30 PM on Tuesday, March 7, 2017 at Hillsboro Rehabilitation and Health Care Center.He was born on July 13, 1922 at Hillsboro the son of John and Mary (Ocepeck) Umek. John married Elizabeth "Pauline" Stewart on June 25, 1965 at Hillsboro; she preceded him in death on June 4, 2010. He was also preceded in death by his parents; Sister, Ida M. Umek; Brother, William "Willie" Umek; Step daughters, Patsy Wampler and Kaye (Kessler) Reed; Step grandchild, Darcy Lee Kessler.John worked most of his life as a laborer and coal miner, retiring after many years of service. He was a member of Panama VFW Post 6628, Laborer's Local 338 of Wood River and United Mine Workers of America. He was a US Army veteran.Survivors include: Nephew, William "Bill" (Brenda) Umek of Hillsboro, IL; Great nephew, Zachary Umek; Step daughter, Peggy (David) Renquest of Needles, CA; Step son, Jerry (Carole) Kessler of Hillsboro, IL; 5 step grandchildren; 11 Step great grandchildren; 2 Step great great grandchildren.A graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM on Monday, March 13, 2017 at Union Cemetery in Panama with Father Paul Kala officiating. Burial will follow in Union Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Monday from Noon-2:00 PM at Perfetti Funeral Home in Panama.Perfetti Funeral Home in Panama is in charge of arrangements.
