Mr. Dewitt Carter died peacefully in his home on Friday, May 26, 2017 while lovingly surrounded by his family. Dewitt was born on August 15, 1938 to Dewitt Travis and Bertha Carter in Newport News, Virginia. He was affectionately called “Plunk” by his family and childhood friends. In addition to his parents, his sister Viola Francine Alston Brown preceded him in death. Dewitt was a 1956 graduate of Huntington High School in Newport News, Virginia. Thereafter, he was employed by several companies on the Peninsula. He entered the United States Air Force in 1961 and remained enlisted until his Honorable Discharge in 1973. Dewitt graduated from the NASA Apprentice School as an Electrical Engineering Technician in 1978, and he worked at NASA until his death. He obtained several master trades licenses, using them for his own maintenance business, A-Z Services. Dewitt Carter took pride in his ability and drive to use his work as a means to provide for his family and others in need, doing so since his youth in order to assist his single mother and sisters. He cherished his wife of 54 years, Nadene Hughes Carter, and together they made a loving, secure, and comfortable home for their children and Dewitt’s mother. The Carter household was filled with laughter, lessons, good food, friends, family, games, and many sporting events on television, especially Dewitt’s favorite - tennis. As one fascinated by God’s creative works, Dewitt learned more about our Grand Creator through studying the Holy Scriptures and was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses in 1975. To further explore Jehovah’s creation, he and his family traveled to various natural wonders on camping trips. Dewitt also appreciated and enjoyed the creativity and craftsmanship of cooks, athletes, musicians, writers, designers, and other tradesmen. Mr. Dewitt Carter was respected by many and will truly be missed, especially by his wife; two sons, Edmund Carter (Charlenna) of Goldsboro, North Carolina, Averell Carter (Stephanie) of Hampton, Virginia; one daughter, Ella-Jeannette Carter also of Hampton, Virginia; six grandchildren, Brandon Carter, Darius Bennett, Averell Carter, Jr., Jazzmyn Carter, Bryan Carter, and Aaron Carter.
